Oberlin for non-super woke

Anonymous
DC interested in creative writing, STEM, music - all things Oberlin does well. But DC is not left-wing/alternative - is super middle of the road politically and in temperament. Does this kid fit in at Oberlin and do they find their people? Hard to tell from website and what I've read on here.

As discussed in another thread, (https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1178585.page) schools with conservatories like Oberlin may not allow non-music majors to participate in the music programs there.

There are a ton of kids just like that at Oberlin--they fit in fine.

Uh, no, and why would you spend $94K to attend a school that has had significant legal and leadership issues and is known for being over the top liberal when you have 4,000 other choices in america?

Has this been confirmed? Because one of the most appealing things about Oberlin is the "music is everywhere" observation made multiple times.

Just focus on Kenyon instead, which is stronger in creative writing. It's not Hillsdale but it's not too woke esp versus Oberlin.

Any different views if your kid will be a varsity athlete?

+1

Arts & Sciences students can take music lessons from Conservatory students, and there is an Arts & Sciences orchestra.

There are 500-odd concerts every year at Oberlin. Yes, music is everywhere.

Forbes downgraded it in 2023 for financial reasons: 8. Percent Of Freshmen Getting Grant Aid (7.5%): Colleges that hand out scholarships and grants to a large chunk of their incoming freshmen may be wealthy and generous, but an unusually high percentage in this category is often more indicative of desperation to entice students to enroll. Every school needs well-heeled families paying the full sticker price to boost their coffers. Any college where this is less than 40%, like Tufts University (38%), receives full credit, but colleges like Macalester College and Oberlin College, where 87% and 93% of incoming freshmen receive aid, are penalized." https://www.forbes.com/sites/emmawhitford/2023/04/26/forbes-2023-college-financial-grades-the-strongest-and-weakest-colleges/?sh=104de4c01097

OP here - thanks for the helpful responses. And no, not a troll. Use of "woke" is an understood term, especially in the context of college campuses.

Whatever are your prattling on about.

And, yes, absolutely if it was the right school for my child. How is this even a question?

You have a strange way of thinking. Very fringe.

lol. Hillsdale isn’t good enough to be discussed in the same breath as the others.

We visited Oberlin in October.
My DS's biggest issue was there was absolutely no mention of sports.
No pointing to the athletic facilities / walk in the building - nothing.
I think the only mention of anything sports related was the Heisman coached there - but it was not in the context of .... and therefore our sports facilities are named after him.
