DP - absolutely consult a neurologist and also let your psychiatrist know ASAP. The latter might be worth a call this weekend, if she takes off-hours calls. Thinking of you, OP - sending my best. |
New poster but these ridiculous suggestions make me angry too. When a person is having a serious medical event, it’s irresponsible to suggest it’s merely a spiritual awakening. Or anxiety. I’m sorry, OP. I hope your doctors are able to help you soon. |
OP has mentioned she’s heard voices before and that this recent episode where the voice spoke to her and told her to hurt herself for the first time occurred 7 months after having a baby. PPP is actually very possible given that, as is an neuro issue now that she is hearing other stimulus. She knows it’s serious - telling her it could be anxiety is NOT helpful. |
OP, I see here that you have been "hearing voices" for years, and weren't particularly concerned about that, nor was your psychiatrist. I also see that you had a baby 7 months ago and at that time, you had some more problems with hearing voices, but it got better I assume? Any chance you were breastfeeding and have started to wean recently? I am reading here about a link in post partum psychosis which is VERY TREATABLE -- related to right after birth, or several months after, perhaps related to the resumption of menstruation/weaning. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5237442/#:~:text=Onsets%20more%20than%203%20months,episodes%2C%20and%2058%20recurrent%20cases. |
Whoa, the OP never said the voice told her to hurt herself. She said it sounded aggressive though. |
Also a new poster and also angry and these ridiculous responses. |
| OP, call your doctor's after hours number. This is exactly why those numbers exist. You are doing a great job seeking help; keep advocating for yourself. |
My mother have the same issue hearing music. You need to go to ENT doctor. |
|
How much are you sleeping OP?
Postpartum my midwife said 90% of PPA and PPD is sleep deprivation. You need a 4-5 hour continuous, uninterrupted stretch to let your brain consolidate things. Otherwise you’re really at risk of developing mental health issues. 7 months in is about when the wear and tear of the postpartum period really kicks in. My heart goes out to you. Can you get some help at night and really guard your sleep? With my second I used silicone earplugs (Google Mack brand) and a noise machine. It really helped. And yes, every time you drop a feeding you do get hormonal changes that can feel depressing. But this hearing stuff on and off happened to me too. Mostly it was like indistinct chatter but sometimes other hallucination like things. |
What is it? My mother and I sometimes think we hear faint music in the house too. We’ve never heard voices. |
+1000 OP how are you? |
Musical hallucinations and is a part of hearing loss. |
|
A friend heard music i her head followed by start of tinnitus and hearing loss. I’m starting to hear faint sounds at night now.
See an ENT also for hearing tests. Hard to diagnose inner ear problems though. Best!! |
Thank you. She’s nearly deaf without hearing aids now but I thought my hearing was ok. I will call an ENT. Appreciate it. |

For whatever it's worth, musical ear syndrome is a thing and not necessarily related to the voices.
