Hi OP! I hear voices like you described, but only when I’m falling asleep. Men, women, old, young - and saying very random and somewhat mundane things like “Next Wednesday, maybe” or “Try the red one” or “Sure beats last time,” or “Let’s consider it.” Like regular normal phrases. They never talk “to” me, it’s like I’m overhearing snippets of conversations.
It’s gone on for years, and I’ve always just chalked it up to our brains belng weird. I have no other medical or mental health issues that I’m aware of. Good luck with your situation. |
| Wishing you all the best and I'm so glad your appointment went well. Sending you love and strength. |
| Thanks for checking back in, OP. We're all here for you if you need anything. Now go enjoy your baby!! |

You should also get blood work and have your thyroid checked.
Sometimes women hear voices when their thyroid goes kaput. |
Call your doctor first before heading to the ER, if it comes to that. It is very difficult to find a bed, and your doctor should be involved in this process. |
Good for you, OP! Thank goodness she took you seriously and the two of you have a plan in place if there's any recurrence of concerning voices. Sending you all the best. |
I also hear voices but rarely. It happens when I'm really really sick, drunk, or extremely tired. But it's full on conversations in very different voices. Never talking to me or negatively either just a completely random conversation. Oftentimes between more than one voice like I'm just privy to a conversation. It's weird.

| Sending you good vibes, OP. Proud of you for taking care of yourself! |

OP I hear things sometimes. As others have said, usually when falling asleep but not only then.
I also had severe PPD and sought treatment; no one locked me up and I didn't hurt anyone. I think it's similar to the tendency to see faces in things. "face pareidolia". I think it's a similar thing for me with sounds. My brain is striving to fill in the blanks. That said, glad you are getting help. |
"Hearing voices"is a neurological problem. It's probably related to elevated levels of dopamine in your brain. You should see a psychiatrist. They can prescribe medication that will lower the amount of dopamine in your brain. Also everyone has voices in their head, separate from their internal monologue. Most people don't notice them or aren't aware of them. Some people have really loud voices and it's hard not to pay attention to them. Our brains run all sorts of subsystems (like apps) that are giving our conscious mind information all the time and the conscious mind integrates that information into an internal monologue. If you're not integrating well, you hear voices. Tons and tons of people hear voices and live pretty normal lives. |
To lose your liberty against your will you have to be deemed a danger to yourself or others and that’s very hard to show. |

What a lovely thread. Usually a couple of mean posters come and spoil it - labeling people looking for help as crazy. Couple of such threads going on right now.
Maybe take your DH to your appt once so he may get some tips on how to handle should it be needed. |
It’s weird to say everyone has voices but don’t notice them. I just don’t think that’s true. I never hear voices. I heard a voice ONE TIME as a child 35+ years ago calling my name. That freaked me out at the time and I’ve never forgotten it. Aside from that single incident, it’s never happened again and I absolutely do not have voices that I don’t notice or ignore. |
I get these too! Right on the cusp of falling asleep, when I’m in a state of deep body relaxation. More when I’m extremely tired and sleep-deprived like with jet lag. I read that they’re called hypnogogic (sp?) hallucinations and are not uncommon. Mine are totally random voices saying random thing, like spinning the dial on talk radio stations. One time I heard my late mom calling my name. That was special as I hadn’t heard her voice in a long time. |
| I’ve heard a phone ringing in my head occasionally as I’m falling asleep or waking up. Kind of freaky and startled me at times. |
