| I apologize for the strange post. I frequently hear other voices in my head (they are distinct from my own internal monologue). The voices change; they can be male, female, young, old, friendly, mean. Anyways, I just heard a a voice clear as day say “I don’t have to be nice to you”. Usually the voices just say random words or chatter amongst themselves and they don’t bother me. But this has left my feeling a little scared. Also, to be clear, the voices are internal (from my head), not external. I have anxiety and depression. Is this a sign I’m going crazy? |
| Please seek professional help from a psychiatrist. I don’t think you will get good advice here and I do think you should prioritize seeing a psychiatrist. Please. |
|
If you are really hearing voices, yes, this is a symptom of psychosis which can develop adjacent to depression.
If you’re already working with a therapist, please tell them about this asap. If you’re not working with one, you should be and given the voices you’ve described and particularly this one which is hostile toward you, I think you should go get assessed at urgent care or emergency room. |
| Please go to the emergency room ASAP. This is an emergency. |
There is no need to label yourself as crazy. Its a mental health issue. Go see a board certified and experienced psychiatrist. He/she can do exams and lab tests, diagnose the problem, offer medication, recommend therapist and teach ways to improve overall health while improving mental health. Its not you, its something you need to fix with support of professionals. |
| Thinking about you, OP. ❤️ |
| Look at the back of your health insurance card, there is a phone number, call and ask them about where you need to go. If you don't have one or can't find one, call 911 and ask them. |
NP Why? Op has experiences with voices already. Why not just schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist noting symptoms to which the doctor can assess the urgency. I am not saying you're wrong as I don't have experience with this type of thing so I genuinely want to know why it's an ER visit. Op, do the voices ever talk down to you or is this the first aggressive statement? Do they ever instruct or guide your actions? Could this be a side effect from some medicine? Could you have a gas leak or some environmental concern, or do you hear other voices when you are outside of your home too? |
| Thank you for the replies. I’ve been stable on medication for years (with a small relapse during pregnancy and after giving birth 7 months ago). I’ve told my therapist about the voices before, but she wasn’t concerned (I think because they haven’t been aggressive). I actually have an appointment with my psychiatrist on Tuesday, so I will definitely be mentioning this to her. I don’t feel I need to go to the ER as I don’t feel I’m a danger to myself or others. |
Op here. I have an appointment with my psychiatrist on Tuesday. I’ve been on the same medications for years. I don’t think there’s any environmental factors as I’ve been “hearing” voices for years and I hear them everywhere. They usually say nonsensical, harmless things. This is the first time they have been aggressive in any way. |
| Do you have metal fillings? I think in very rare cases metal dentalwork has acted as antenae, picking up radio signals. |
| I was in the camp of “this isn’t a big deal-just get an appointment with a psychiatrist “, up until you said you gave birth 7 months ago. I think that changes the analysis, OP. Can you call your OB? I’m worried about potential postpartum psychosis, which is an emergency. |
What?!! |
I just googled that out of curiosity and apparently its a real thing, strong radio waves can make metal vibrate like a speaker and the vibrations can be transferred to the ear drums through the skull. |
Unless you live next to a radio tower, you shouldn't have any problems. It's an extremely rare effect and has no bearing on OP's original post. |
