Don't they check if you have Hep B antibody when you're pregnant?
It's been a while since my youngest was born but I'm pretty sure I had a blood exam to check for this and I'm sure those who don't have the antibody have to get a shot during pregnancy, so I wonder why is vertical transmission is such a big concern? The only situation that would make sense is if this was in a developing country where the mother's prenatal status is pretty much unknown till the birth of the baby, so healthcare providers prefer to vaccinate every new born for prevention just in case. |
They do check. It's standard in pregnancy. |
That said, the shot you are thinking of is something else. |
All vaccinations are “just in case.” Nobody knows exactly when/if the child will be exposed to the pathogen. The schedule is set based on the development of the immune system and the costs-benefits of timing. Even if you believe your newborn is lower risk, I’m not sure what the rationale is for tying yourself up in knots based on the idea that you can prevent the risk for longer than the standard schedule. |
| I decided to get the Hep B shot week 1 at the pediatrician’s office since neither caregiver had hep b. We’ve been on schedule with vaccines since then. It was right for us and nobody batted an eye at the hospital. We did opt for vitamin k and eye antibiotics based on a review of a few studies. |
By "research" do you mean funding a lab and carrying out hypothesis-testing experiments? Or just googling crap that confirms your priors? |
Yes, Google ( or Duck Duck Go) an YouTube make everyone feel like they've got all the info at their fingertips. |
They check. But they don't check just before you go into labor. My guess is it's a combo of women who don't know they have Hep B and ensuring vaccine uptake. Either way, I saw no reason to wait. My kid gets all vaccines on schedule. |
What are the “cost-benefits of timing”? |
So relieved you were able to do your "own research" can't listen to those doctors ya know. |
Just too bad doctors aren’t allowed to think for themselves anymore. They’re told what to say. You can get a robot to do that. |
It depends a lot on the doctor. Some will really engage in these conversations and address concerns. Others either don't have the specific knowledge on every topic or have a knee jerk reaction to anyone questioning a vaccine. Doctors vary, like every profession. |
Any doctor who doesn’t spout the party line about vaccines will most likely get investigated. |

Our pediatrician has known my husband for 30 years and danced at our wedding, but sure, he told us to vaccinate our son on day one— and advised that his grandchildren be vaccinated day one— because of Big Brother. If you genuinely don’t think your pediatrician can “think for themselves” your problem is your pediatrician. |
