The numbers from 2016 onwards still show a decline in numbers for the main Virginia schools:

UVA
2016 33
2017 34
2018 35
2019 29
2020 27
2021 21

Overall 36% decline in matriculation since 2016

VT
2016 47
2017 48
2018 10
2019 45
2020 35
2021 22

Overall 53% decline in matriculation since 2016

W&M
2016 17
2017 17
2018 15
2019 16
2020 11
2021 11

Overall 35% decline in matriculation since 2016

GMU
2016 16
2017 16
2018 17
2019 21
2020 18
2021 6

Overall 38% decline in matriculation since 2016

JMU
2016 19
2017 17
2018 22
2019 15
2020 15
2021 17

Overall 10% decline in matriculation since 2016

The data are from the same school magazine so subject to the same caveats.

UVA, VT, W&M and GMU have higher numbers in 2023 than 2021, while JMU has a decrease. Shows that 2021 was really bad (see other thread) and 2023 is an improvement for those schools. Is it a reversion to the mean or a deviation? Wait until next year to see the preliminary answers.

All of these colleges have gotten more selective over the years. For all students, no matter where you're from or what school you go to.

It isn't even that they've become more selective, which they have (75th percentil at UVA last year haad a 4.53 GPA and a 34 ACT) but because parents wizened up duing covid and said "I'm not paying $84K a year" which is what my SLAC now is. You might remember that many people lost their jobs during covid. Recent college grads couldn't get jobs in their field. Many parents looked at the situation and said "gosh we have amazing opportunities right here in VA at a "reasonable" cost". Which is exactly what we did. So, ergo, yes, they've become a LOT more selective but economics and covid give you a simply reason why

Hardest possible agree.

Ditto. UVA was a no-brainer for us. We are a family with more kids that will also be in college in the near future. We have saved and have the finances to afford full pay at one of these 85k places, but why should we?

Maybe if our child got in to Wharton, I could justify it. I'm not sure I could have though otherwise.

I don't know how to break this to you, so I'll just leave this right here:

https://www.fcps.edu/news/fcps-high-schools-ranked-among-best-virginia-and-nation-us-news-and-world-report

US News is certainly one source of information.

It appears to be the source that FCPS has cited, so yes.

It was a source that FCPS cited at a time when it thought it was in its interests to do so. It doesn't mean FCPS or anyone else views it as definitive, as opposed to informative.

Usnews rankings are based on things other than college destination. Someone needs to make a ranking based solely on college destination, which is what this thread is mainly concerned about.

I'll say it again: pretty sure no one commenting on this thread has complete visibility into the post-graduation plans of all the kids attending specific schools, so they should refrain from either using superlatives ("best outcomes," etc.) or drawing inferences from incomplete sources ("no one is going to School X..."). So no one here can come up with any type of "ranking based solely on college destination" that would be very meaningful.

I'm thinking that's probably not true, but if it were it would just make you or your kid a stalker.

Oh - I was hoping you wouldn't take it badly but it appears you have. I'm sorry.

There's a student going to Richmond. It was posted on the Instagram page but perhaps not in the senior edition of the newspaper.

Richmond and W&L get relatively few from in state.

Why should they when we have such fantastic in-state schools like uva and W&M?

There are that many Yale legacies at McLean?

Aren’t most Yale alums in this area in Maryland or dc and pretty rare in VA?

22101 is a mecca for Yale alumnae. Truth.

Congrats to the McLean HS class of 2023! Fabulous college choices - bright futures ahead, for sure. Enjoy the journey and make time to savor the little things this summer - a spectacular sunset, walks in the woods, quality time with your family and besties, etc. The best is yet to come.

If you take all of the top high schools, but worldwide children of dictators, billionaires, and the like, how many kids from one HS can get into an Ivy in the first place?

Why would they go OOS to pay near exclusive private tuition and fees to be second class students at UCLA and Berkeley?
