I thought MCPS had graduations at DAR Constitution Hall. I didn’t think they ever were outside for high school.

MCPS used to have graduations at DAR Constitution Hall, the Xfinity Center, and Mount St. Mary's University. Then came covid. Now some high schools have graduation in their stadiums.

And they don't use Xfinity anymore, they go to UMBC instead. See the whole list of locations here:

https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/graduation/

UMBC?! Good grief. That's even further away than Xfinity.

There aren't any large arenas like that in MoCo.

Is Strathmore too small?

Strathmore's capacity is 1976, compared to DAR's 3702, and UMBC's 5500.

Do these MCPS staff flunkies not realize that you can't simply change a dinner reservation at a Michelin-starred restaurant on the fly? Do they think we all celebrate our kids's graduations at Olive Garden and can just show up whenever we want? Why didn't MCPS have a back-up plan for this once-in-a-generation unique set of environmental circumstances that would have allowed them to move the ceremony inside and still have it this morning? Thanks, Monifa. Typical lack of preparedness from MCPS even until the bitter end.

Seriously?

Health and safety > reservations.

Are you driving to the Inn at Little Washington this evening? We've been there, truly wonderful.
Also ate Olive Garden carryout last week. Go figure.

A fairly new arena at UMBC. Glad WJ is there.

RM is having it up at UMBC. There was a survey of where to have it, indoor/outdoor, etc. I'm glad we get to have ours indoors. Cooler, and now with the air issue, we don't have to worry about air quality outside.

Every school gets to choose. Some do still us Constitution Hall.

Honestly, it's ridiculous that MoCo doesn't have a facility that is large enough to host graduations in the county. The options are:

1) On campus at school (parking is a nightmare and weather can make this untenable)
2) Constitution Hall (Super far and parking is also a nightmare)
3) UMBC (Parking is good but also far)

Xfinity Center is apparently out of the price range of most MCPS schools now too.

What would it be used for, the other 50 weeks of the year?

I certainly don't want to schlep down to DAR Constitution Hall, but most able-bodied people can avoid the parking nightmare by taking Metro.

What about the stadium at the soccerplex in Germantown? Has that ever been considered for graduations?

I was wondering about this as well. MoCo made such a big deal about investing in building that out so you'd think it could be used for mass events like this.

I’m so grateful that BCC’s graduation didn’t get canceled yesterday. We were on the football field at 9 AM. It was definitely smoky but not as bad as today.

I expect they don't want to mess up the field.

Is it fully canceled or just postponed? Trying to coordinate with extended family

If you go to Michelin starred restaurants, why are you sending your kids to public schools? Go to private schools with the wealthy.

Xfinity is at UMD in College Park.

from RM to xfinity is 43min

from RM to UMBC is 50 min

A whopping 7 min diff. CP may be closer, but the traffic to CP is horrible, especially with the purple line construction going on. My kid is going to UMDCP.

And someone pointed out that xfinity is too expensive.

Only if you take the ICC. Otherwise it's 40 minutes by car to Xfinity vs. 60 minutes by car to UMBC. Which is a long way to drive for a high school graduation.

ok, yea, I would take the ICC, but is an extra 20min one way for this *one* time that much of a big deal? I'd rather fight the traffic going north than through 495 to CP.

Xfinity is too far. UMBC is even more too far.
