They could have done this. We have IEPs and failed SOLs. I could have uploaded those records in seconds. I’m disgusted that only 20,000 kids in the whole state will get this. What’s even the point of it?

+1 kids who failed SOLs. Your special needs kids aren't the only ones who need tutoring, PPs. Stop acting so entitled.

Do we know if more funding may be available for this or how they are proceeding? I received an email that my application is complete but nothing else.

They could have but this is how the Youngkin admin chose to do it. It's shameful really.

Elections matter.

What's shameful is that ACPS has been sitting on $54 million of ESSR funds after denying that it hadn't been used. How much are other districts sitting on? Why aren't they implementing their own grant programs?

Exactly. We are in APS and they blew a ridiculous amount of their funding on a failed virtual learning program and have done NOTHING even remotely close to this tutoring program, but, people want to complain and make it political about Youngkin. How about blasting your own school systems and ask why they haven't done anything like this yet?

Exactly! I back to the "elections have consequences" poster---he/she should vote better next time for their school board reps!!!

+1000 Blaming Youngkin is lazy and shows a willful ignorance. They don't want a solution from their district..far easier to keep blaming Youngkin than intellectually engage.

Give me a break. Youngkin is throwing good money after bad. Sorry for you he’s been so awful on the thing that got him elected. One educational failure after another.

Anonymous wrote:Question for those using Outschool: is there a list of qualified tutors / classes? Is there something special you need to do to link those classes to the class wallet. For example, I use a credit card for my son’s art class and wouldn’t consider that a qualified subject, so would continue to pay for that the normal way. Does Outschool help or facilitate the use of the grant money for appropriate subject matter, such as math and reading?

I think you pay for the classes via classwallet. So log into class wallet and pay for classes from there. There is a 28 day time from when you request payment to when the provider is paid. During that time VDOE reviews the payment request. I imagine they’d de Yam art class. The website says grants are for core subject areas, and specified English, math, science, social studies and foreign language needed for graduation. See the website for a better list, but that is my recollection. Also, during the webinar I signed up for after receiving a grant the presenter said only Ms and HS students could use grants for foreign language language classes/tutors, etc.

thanks!
How do I listen to the webinar?

I was given a couple dates to choose while verifying acceptance of the grant. Separate, but kinda related, I’ve found they respond quickly when
I’ve emailed with a question.

The point is trying to start to clean up the mess that the school districts and blackface, moonwalking Northam made.

and you think Youngkin is doing this through grants that won't reach the kids who need them most? you're delusional. he only cares about his right wing base and his presidential aspirations. quite clear he doesn't care about kids who actually need help.

Anger is misdirected at Youngkin. Our school ignores UMC kids who struggle to read and instead of providing extra in school help, admin gives us approved tutoring recommendations. My neighbor spent a small fortune on tutoring her daughter (who still read several grade levels behind) only to finally discover a few years later that her daughter was actually dyslexic.

My son’s school delayed evaluations so long, we had to pay thousands ourselves. I’m thankful for the $1500 to help him catch up on reading skills over the summer, since the school gave us no assistance (except sending home extra baby books to read out loud).

Lots of Youngkin apologists on here.

He was never planning to be the education governor, or at least not in the way that I would want him to be. To him, it's all about culture wars.

Ugh, waited too long and now funding has run out so can’t apply!

Can someone explain how you link classwallet to outschool please?
And do you know if you can get reimbursed for a summer class that you already paid for? Thanks.

I get that the program isn’t perfect, but seeing a teacher on AEM complaining about the program and ranting about how teachers are wildly opposed to it in response to a parent who is simply looking for a tutor for her kid really gets me. As someone who has turned their life upside down to get adequate services, 1500 is a stop in the bucket - but still a welcome one. We learned about the program pretty early because we have lots of connections to special education tutors and services and specialized schools. Did the public schools fail to blast the info as fast or effectively? Was this because they didn’t approve of the program or is it because they didn’t care if their students were able to obtain grants? I’m not a Youngkin fan, but I’m thankful for the non-APS teacher who tracked me down and explained that the program was open to all students (an email I had seen from APS made me think it was only available for a lower income bracket).
