$1,500 tutor grants

Anonymous
Hey, just wanted to remind VA residents that they state still has money for those $1,500 grants for tutoring. I vaguely remember seeing it mentioned in a school newsletter a while back. They sent another one a few days ago reminding people, I applied online (just had to upload proof of VA residency) and they already approved my family for the grant like two days later. Apparently it is first come, first serve up to $30m total.

If you have low HHI, you can get $3,000, but have to upload your tax return.

I thought it would be more complicated to apply and be approved for it, but apparently it isn't.

You don't even need to have a proven disability or IEP to be eligible for Virginia's Acceleration Grant for therapies and tutoring.

Please share a website where you can find more information because we would 100000% utilize this for our child.

Yes, this is real. I’m approved for $3,000 for my two kids. You have to spend $750 of your kid’s $1,500 by August or the rest reverts back to VDOE.

I did it this week, and like PP, it took about 2-3 days for my kids to get approved.

Can these grants be used for something like lindamood-bell curriculum? I can’t seem to find a way to cover that with this grant, but it fully qualifies as a special reading intervention.

can we use this on tutoring we have already done? It says it has to be spent by 8/23

I applied for my two kids and got approved, but need to go in and figure out how to use the funds.

This sucks. We have spent 5 times that amount in the past couple years for specialized reading tutoring and are still paying for it but the grant has to be used on their list of approved providers. Why not just give parents the option to submit proof of qualified expenses?

^^^You raise a good point. What you suggest would seem in the same spirit as "school choice" that conservatives champion.

Have you applied and your provider is NOT on the approved list? The requirements to be approved seem pretty easy to meet.

I think so There may be speech therapists or tutors on the list that use the curriculum.

You just need to find an approved provider. Check the list of who is already approved when you log in to your account — I’m guessing the tutors/companies on that list will not be able to meet the demand to spend free money by August.

Send your tutor the link and have them fill out the form. It’s easy to get them on that list. Voila - tutoring covered. We are asking ours to do this.

Could someone link to the list of approved providers? We have done the application and been approved, but I can't find how and where to spend the funds.
