Do Local Republicans Want to Gut or Reform FCPS?

1. An appropriate school calendar without as many disruptions, which are harmful to children. Fairfax County has the least amount of 5-day school weeks than any other school district in the nation.
2. The use of actual textbooks, and not laptops, in early education.
3. Allocating resources for more robust vocational education opportunities.
4. Reforming Special Education
5. Professionalizing the Principal Pipeline, and have recruitment and vetting handled by Human Relations, and not an outside firm.
6. Increase pay to teachers
7. Supporting teachers with discipline issues they encounter in the classroom

Do they support banning books in school libraries or do they allow our professional librarians to make choices pursuant to the checks and balances of the current regulations?

The problem in FCPS is one party rule. They take everything to an extreme because there is no alternate voice. Its an echo chamber. I really think we need diversity of thought on the school board and that means another political party.

So you support graphic novels showing sexual acts?

Republicans are taking away women’s right to health care when pregnant.

They also want to privatize education.

I’m not willing to trust in a republican school
Board candidate yet given their past behavior.

I have voted for r and d before but will not vote r in the current climate. Their goal is to undermine government.

This is why I’m not voting D anymore - past behavior - I saw what I needed to see with the all D decision on school closures and they completely lost my trust.

So schools are now providing the daycare you wanted- the current behavior is to have in person public schools. Not sure I see your point. It is more like you are voting out of anger than current behavior. For me republicans are still demonstrating the same behavior but for you the dems in charge are holding in person school and have been for the last 2 years so you are basing your vote on anger.

Turns out I was right all along and kids learn better in person, and it's not just about the babysitting. Who would have thunk it?!?!?!??!

Get over it. Yes it sucked big time. It was disruptive. But we were dealing with a pandemic. Stop pretending you would have dealt with the stress of making the decisions any better.

I will never forget and I hope the rest of the voters of Fairfax county don't either. And this isn't a hindsight is 20/20 situation - I told the school board to reopen in Fall 2020 - so I'm not pretending. I'll give a pass for March - June 2020 (to Northam).

This is all great but do you really think the SB has that much power? I’m not being snarky. I actually don’t think they can change much and a lot of the issues people have with the SB come down to policy issues. Not just at the local level but also state and federal.

DP. I am bolding what I do think the SB can easily control.

Whoops - that didn't work. Here is what I think the SB can easily control:

Um who are you yelling at? Of course it sucked. I too knew it was going to suck. I took a year off of teaching to stay with my first grader so they could learn. I was lucky we could do that. Why do you think I or anyone disagrees with you? We just know that it was an emergency and frankly we are better at managing our emotions about it. Why get so irate about it? People aren’t great in emergencies and that was a world wide emergency. Relax. Why dismantle the government because you are unable to manage your outrage?

I don't want censorship on either side - but that doesn't mean I vote D anymore. I don't find the Ds to support free speech any more than the Rs. In my ES there was a specific issue with a teacher reading a book with the N word to teach the kids about it - that was a left issue of censorship. In real life - not culture wars on the media - I haven't seen R book banning in my local schools.

Do what you want - I'm not willing to give a free pass for the worst education disaster that I've seen in 40 years. And, a two party system is the epitome of democracy - and not a dismantling of the government, so I don't view your response as a healthier way to manage outrage.

Then you missed the book challenges made by Stacy Langton and others in FCPS. They watched Fox News and then acted based on those segments. FCPS has great professal librarians and a comprehensive set of regs on book selection and book challenges. If the R candidates suooort removing books apart from the process, I am a hard no. So I am still waiting for a R alternative.

Sounds ok, but I'd like to see a citation on #1.

The sensible middle ground is to respect the current process, but pay more attention to who is serving on the committees that end up validating book selections for various grade levels.

As we've seen from some of the recommendations coming from the Family Life committee, the Democrats tends to appoint people to those committees who are far-left party activists with values that aren't necessarily aligned with most other county residents. Some of those folks need to be in long-term therapy and instead they get rewarded with committee appointments.
