AITA: Grocery bagging

You cannot possibly be this delusional to think that observing reality makes one a moron. Wages for a job are what the market will bear. If the employer is underpaying, they won't be able to find anyone to work (the situation many places are in now.) If the employer is overpaying, they will have their pick of high-quality employees and will be able to replace them easily. If a job does not pay enough to pay rent and raise children, then you get roommates, you move in with family or the OTHER PARENT of the children, or you improve your skills to get a better-paying job. An independent grocery store owner who may be barely making a profit is supposed to make sure that each grocery bagger, regardless of value to the company, is making enough to pay rent for an unshared apartment in the neighborhood of their choice? What if it's a crappy garden apartment or an apartment in a crummy neighborhood and they feel they deserve better? Does that merit a raise? I've worked every bad job you can think of and currently work at a hospital, which used to pay local residents a living wage to clean the rooms and now pays "immigrants with families" less than you probably pay your babysitter, distorting the labor market. Civilized societies should not allow this. |

+1 nobody can be this dense. Cashiers bag groceries for other cashiers. Managers will hop in. People shagging the carts in the parking lot may also have bagging duties. It's sickening that people are so judgmental yet so ignorant about these jobs. They have to just be riling people up. |

Cashier is supposed to do it..
I worked as a cashier at a grocery store. Too many idiots in this thread. The better thing would have been if the cashier asked, "DO YOU want to work as a team?". If the customer says"no", NBD. Some customers like to bag their own. But bagging is the cashier's job and they cannot tell the the customer to do work. |

I worked as a grocery store cashier for several years, and here’s my two cents. You are totally fine and the cashier was absolutely TA. Cashiers don’t get to assign duties to customers. And that’s especially true when that duty is one the cashier is being paid to perform. And cashiers shouldn’t sulk when the customer declines being pressed into service.

I just noticed that my local Giant check out people don't bag anymore. I don't know if I've just happened to get a few check out people are aren't doing it, or if it's a policy. It's kind of annoying because the check out person just keeps sending stuff through and it's hard to keep up. When the check out person does the bagging, they can pause to bag so the area doesn't get all backed up. My local Whole Foods used to always have baggers, but now it's hit or miss. |

Plus the giant, and Harris Teeter are very clear that their cashiers are responsible for bagging, and Safeway has more of a store associate job description, but bagging is included in it.
