I shop at Giant and notice that some checkers just don’t bag. I step in and start bagging myself after all my food starts getting crushed at the end of the conveyor belt. If I’m paying full price for groceries I shouldn’t be bagging or give me a discount.
and I make sure I move as slowly as possible.
I just noticed that my local Giant check out people don't bag anymore. I don't know if I've just happened to get a few check out people are aren't doing it, or if it's a policy. It's kind of annoying because the check out person just keeps sending stuff through and it's hard to keep up. When the check out person does the bagging, they can pause to bag so the area doesn't get all backed up. My local Whole Foods used to always have baggers, but now it's hit or miss.
I have a few minutes, so I checked current cashier job ads for Giant, Harris Teeter and Safeway. Plus the giant, and Harris Teeter are very clear that their cashiers are responsible for bagging, and Safeway has more of a store associate job description, but bagging is included in it. It is not store policy to have customers bag their own groceries. Giant’s cashier job ad for Bethesda: Cashier We rely on our cashiers to handle our products and customers with care. They’re the face of the store. More than anyone, they interact with our customers and help answer any questions they might have. That’s not all, they also scan purchases, bag groceries, and process all transactions. This is just a general overview of their job duties. You may be asked to assist in other ways too, depending on the needs of your store. Harris Teeter Rockville This is a full time position. Primary responsibility is to Take Excellent Care Of Our Customers by satisfying each customer's needs, exceeding their expectations, and making every shopping visit a pleasant and satisfying experience. This requires following correct bagging procedures, providing carryout and parcel pickup service, loading merchandise into customer vehicles, and returning shopping carts into the store. Safeway Bethesda As a store associate (aka clerk in the grocery world), your potential to grow and thrive is at your fingertips. To truly be successful in the position, you need to be thoughtful and passionate about your work. In this role, you are the face of the Company and whether you are bagging groceries, arranging flowers, slicing cheese, or sweeping the floor you will always have the opportunity to interact with our valued customers. And the icing on the cake is, this is your opportunity to make a difference in the lives of your customers and community.
