Did you end up sending your kid to McLean or did you find another school? How is it working out?

We are appalled by the arrogant, dismissive attitude of the school board member about the overcrowding there and not sure we can stomach sending DC there.

Longfellow is a great school. Lot of smart kids and extremely competitive to get into TJ. My child got in last year from Longfellow
For a good or easy chance to get into TJ you can be out of feeder schools

Isn't that funny, the feeder schools are now the hardest places to get into TJHS from

Because of the quota system lot of deserving students are not getting admitted which is disappointing for the kid and parents. They had worked so hard all year long. Some kids from other schools who got in are surprised they were the top 1.5%. Don’t know if this is funny for you

FALSE, because of the improvements to the selection process more deserving students are being selected now than in years past.

In the past they most just picked kids who could afford prep classes which were mostly from a few wealthy schools. This wasn't the same thing as the most gifted, but people who were gaming admissions.

Not funny. More qualified students are not getting a fair shot at TJ and other students who are leaving after a year or two are taking up spots that will never be filled.

They’re getting a plenty fair shot at TJ. They’re just not measuring up to the other 40 kids at their school who ARE getting admitted. So instead of remaining in those kids’ shadows at TJ, they’re getting a chance to shine at their base school.

So we're handing out TJ seats to prepped UMC kids not because they are the most qualified but to reward their parents for sending them to low-ranking schools?

Can kind of see the rationale from a policy perspective but given that it's not that many seats it's a fairly small carrot.

I think that families that are willing to invest in engaging in lower-income areas should be rewarded. They leaned into those areas instead of fleeing them.

That’s not leaning in; it’s arbitrage.

I’d love to meet these families sending their little precious to Whitman just to get an edge in TJ admissions

I heard most of the kids who got in had bought the test answers.

Stop with the "if you got into TJ in the past you must have prepped." Was there prepping going on - absolutely. Did every TJ admit in the past do it? Heck no. And for the most part, it was the non-prepped kids that did well at TJ. Per the urban myth that everyone spent ungodly late nights on homework or needed massive tutoring. While I believe the current system is a way over-reaction and more an excuse by the SB to appear "woke"................I'm hoping the end result is that kids who don't need prepping are the ones that get admitted - and succeed - at TJ.

There are top math students including MathCounts winners and participants in USAJMO who were not admitted. Academies of Loudoun seems to be doing a better job of selecting the top kids within a school, even if it has a maximum quota per school.

DC is truly a brilliant and hardworking kid - the top student in honors geometry (near perfect average), acing the rest of their all honors courses, all advanced pass or perfect SOL scores, etc. DC is white and we do not qualify for free/reduced priced meals.

I'm curious to know what the admittance pool looks like at a school like ours? Do we have a shot or are the spots typically offered to high performing students with one or more "experience factors"?

I hope to keep the conversation civil and am genuinely asking out of curiosity. TIA!

By lower ranking you mean less affluent?

Yes, the kids from schools where they traditionally can't afford the test answers.

Many parents are upset the backdoor is no longer accessible and haven't given up gaming the system.
