Thoughts on Rives or Sutton for APS SB?

This made me smile! (I originally typed "smite," which is much more DCUM)

He's a nope for me.

So he's one of the APE losers?

yup

I choose the candidate who seems more focused on academics and less focused on things like trans issues/CRT/etc. In my opinion, that person in this race is Rives. School should primarily be about teaching children. The social issues are a distraction.

Bethany literally chairs the Advisory Council on Teaching and Learning. What has Vell done for academics?

Rives.

The trans policy parents are one trick ponies who can’t see the larger picture for APS

I lurk in APE but he's not in the FB group. I haven't even seen much posted about his campaign and they haven't endorsed him.

He's definitely not in APE.

I'll never vote for Rives because of that nutty pro-forced masking letter SHAB issued in January/February of this year.

Forced masking has continuously failed and has costs for small kids learning to read, communicate, etc. It also makes 0 sense considering the mortality risk of COVID is less than the flu to kids (and now adults over 50, considering they're all vaccinated and/or have been infected).

It's so sad to see the 5% of kids still wearing masks at school. Their parents are obviously aligned with the Vells of the world, and can't analyze risk.

I don't like the guy so vote against him for whatever reason you want but you're just awful. 5% of the world is masking now - probably the ones who are high risk and really need to - yet that personally offends you? Weird.

Also the % of kids masking is much larger than 5% at my kids' school.

Rives is Trumpkin if that's what you want, I don't.

School Health Advisory Board. He chaired it but just for a year I think. He has not done much for the schools compared to Bethany.

Bethany seems to think everything is just fine in APS. We've had way too many of those folks on the SB the last few years. RG and MK are good. NVD was last really good one. I think BS will be a MOG who seemed nice but didn't seem to do much. Better than DP or CDT I guess. But APS needs someone who's willing to ask harder questions.

The sun gazette summed it up pretty well:

There have been a precious few School Board members in recent years able to provide such direction and leadership. Abby Raphael was one. Nancy Van Doren another. Sometimes Kanninen could rise to the occasion, and relative newcomer Cristina Diaz-Torres now and again fills us with hope that she might slip into that role, as well.

We’re not necessarily seeing that in likely winner Sutton, who seems already falling into the paralysis-by-analysis trap of seeking to have brought to the table more and more statistical data for decision-making purposes.

That in and of itself is not a bad thing, but reminds us of the caution from Mark Twain (is that rascal even taught in schools any more?) to be eternally wary of three things: “lies, damned lies and statistics.”

After all, data can be used by those in power to prove anything, disprove anything and, as often is the case in APS, simply avoid doing anything. That kick-the-can-down-the-road, talk-issues-to-death mentality has plagued an often rudderless School Board in recent years.

I agree with the assessment of current board members but Youngkinite Vell Rives is certainly NOT the solution.
