Arlington or Montgomery County? [VA/MD]

Maryland is just.... a no.

Your kid will have zero class.

We live in north Arlington and our daughters bike was stolen from our front yard. It was a nice bike.

We actually have a video of it and Arlington county police would not even look at it.

It is true property crime is absolutely not enforced. There is some value that no one seems to know of what police will actually investigate; but for most of us your are on your own.

Bethesda has some beautiful homes and areas (Kenwood especially). Bethesda center is nice and very tidy. I just can't get excited about it. I prefer Arlington and its neighborhood areas, which seem to have a bit more personality. But maybe that's unfair since I don't know MoCo so well. What I was surprised about, though, is the uncertainty of the schools in Arlington. There's so much movement and reorganization and people seem deeply unhappy with ACPS on this forum so it's given me some pause (we are at the elementary level in DCPS right now and quite happy with our school so not in a rush to move). I absolutely love Takoma Park, MD, and agree that someone from the Bay area might find a lot to love about it. It's the DC area at its crunchiest/funkiest!

Well given Youngkin is going to privatize VA schools Betsey DeVos model good luck with that.

What typical Maryland nonsense/hyperbole, and ironic given the same fools constantly assert a big advantage of MoCo over NoVa is more private secondary schools like Georgetown Prep (Kavanaugh’s alma mater).

Youngkin’s kid also went to Georgetown Prep. Birds of a feather

Only 28% of third graders nationally read at grade level. MCPS wins again.

Can you talk more about this, especially in Arlington?

There is not a ton of crime in arlington. Hardly. There are the drunk fights in bars in Clarendon and car hackings in pentagon city. Arlington is a very safe place to live. I probably wouldn’t want to live on culpepper st, but other than that, I’d live almost anywhere in arlington and feel safe.

Arlington stopped tracking and reporting property crimes like 2 years ago. Where have you been?
There are hundreds of car break ins EVERY day that they do not put into county stats. Only over some amount like 1000 in value or 5000 or something ridiculous is recorded.

Read the daily Arlington police reports. Most of more serious crimes that police can respond to are in South Arlington. Most of the petty crimes that are reported on line are in North Arlington. Read tge actual reports to better understand the crimes.

“I wouldn’t want to live on Culpeper St” is PP’s racist dog whistle to a street in the rapidly gentrifying African American community of Hall’s Hill, which terminates at the apartheid wall. Worry less about crime in Arlington and more about racist elitists like PP.

Arlington has lots of property crime. Even in the nicer north parts.
Cars are regularly broken into at pools, dog parks and parks.
Pentagon city is pretty sketchy at times as well.

The bigger issue is small lots and chain link fences.

Sorry that would be DOD schools (Department of Defense) schools win again

Show me a credible source besides US news that puts MCPS anywhere high up on academic testing or achievement.

Given current politics moving to VA before knowing if the VA legislature will turn red fully is just dumb.

Youngkin is going to privatize schools.
The only one holding him at bay is L Louise Lucas

He will destroy VA he is a liar and criminal however he is gov for three more years. He will do everything he can to make a ultra conservative state. IE Women will lose more rights.

VA is not a place to move to currently.

MCPS is a great school system ignore the trolls.

If you move every time a new politician takes office, you'll be moving a lot. The politics of the current Va. governor are a trivial consideration for most rational people, who are much more impacted in their day to day lives by issues like transportation infrastructure, taxes, school system quality and availability (including at the university level), crime, and issues other than which way right/left political winds are currently blowing in Richmond.

In Maryland, on the other hand, it's likely the political landscape will remain strongly to the left indefinitely, if that's what floats your boat.

Not so sure. I saw three Sullivan signs in my Bethesda neighborhood today — and no Elrich signs. I think Marylanders like balanced government, not one party monopolies.

Shit. I had no idea about that. Glad I sold my Arlington condo!

Now tell us about the concrete block apartheid wall also being an issue, unless you are on the white side of it

Anonymous wrote:Neither. I'd pick neither!

It's like choosing between the lesser of evils - better high schools (MoCo) versus better in-state colleges (Arlington).

Instead, I'd rather live in McLean, Falls Church (22046), or Vienna (near Old Courthouse Rd to avoid 123). Then you get good schools + in-state colleges, with a decent commute.

Signed,

A MoCo native in NOVA.

Decent commute if you’re leaving at 5AM.

I like all those areas but if you have to commute into dc it’s not going to be pretty.
