Arlington or Montgomery County? [VA/MD]

Virginia has Richmond, the capitol of the confederacy.

Maryland until this year had the most bigoted pro-Confederacy state song, "Maryland, My Maryland." The UMD marching band and the chapel's chimes would regularly play it until recently. Virginia got rid of its state song decades earlier.

I was in Falls Church City the other day and noticed how nice the Route 7 corridor looks. A nice mix of new development and older places that don’t look like slums.

I live in Arlington and the Langston Blvd plan is a farce. Arlington can’t get anything done and Falls church is redeveloping the corridor with little drama

My advice is to skip Arlington.

Basically anyplace you can commute to DC withing 45 minutes will be MAJORITY liberal and democrat..it will be from 65-85 percent left....does the exact percent matter to you ?

OP The Governor of Virginia is going to privatize schools.

He is going to ruin them is that where you want your kids?
And if you have girls pay attention because Virginia politics are going to get very ugly if Dems lose in the legislature in NOV.

MCPS is a good school system and it does not yet have a governor who is 100% a lying POS> He taught his kid to vote illegally you want that? He just put a yoga room so no more references to slavery, in his Mansion he's a racist. He spends more time out of the state than in it. His clear thoughts on Virginia public schools is to bring back prayer, the Betsey DeVos model and the dumbing down of students has already started. He is going to target minorities and LGBQT kids it will be disgusting.

Yes, we have a Republican governor in MD his term is up in November. He is nothing like Youngkin.

Bottom line FCPS vs MCPS no choice.

It will matter everywhere in VA if the Ds lose the general assembly this November.

Abortion bans/restrictions, defunding schools, book banning, etc. All kinds of MAGA crazy.

McLean is not in Arlington, but is instead in a different political jurisdiction, Fairfax County, which has a different school system.

McLean and Great Falls have by most accounts the best area public schools. That alone makes those areas relatively expensive, but also supports real estate values over time. Virginia has many more and better public universities of all sizes and levels of selectivity. Little of Great Falls is "walkable", and your price point would be limiting there, but McLean is an area to consider carefully. Taxes are lower, public services are very good, and McLean has a library, community parks, restaurants, and other amenities you might value, along with a relatively good commute to major employment centers in the area (D.C., Tyson's, Reston, etc). Metro serves the area, and both National and Dulles Airports are short drives away.

VA and it’s not even close. MoCo is backsliding, while VA is developing rapidly and driving much of the area’s job growth.

I’ve lived in both NOVA and MOCO and definitely NOVA. Our family and two children just moved to MOCO for a job and the people are unbelievably snobby and just rude in general. I will find a way out and back to VA as soon as possible. MCPS is going downhill so fast and with the way they handled Covid, I would never send my kids to a school in the district!

I was born in Maryland but live in NoVa now and agree with this. MoCo has a strange vibe - some uber-snooty areas (Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and Potomac) propping up the rest of the county and a population that desperately wants to think of itself as progressive but often vocally dislikes the damage inflicted by those politics. NoVa is also blue but the politics are more balanced and it's less polarized between haves and have-nots.

Tell me how did FCPS and APS handle COVID that was so different and so great?

As you can see OP, it always comes down to the whole NoVa vs MoCo to try to compete with MoCo, even though you asked for Arlington v. MoCo. One county or area in NoVa cannot take on MoCo.
The hate for MoCo is strong in this forum

Did you even read the OP or just look at the title of the thread? OP said they were looking at places in both Arlington and Fairfax in NoVa and only a few places in MoCo in suburban Maryland.

Your comment is silly and contrived.

People who live in Nova by and large seem upset to be there (they are mostly all transplants and wish they were back where they came from) and competitive with one another.

This is so apt and should be pinned. Honestly, I have always wondered why when all things are equal, NovA parents are more competitive with each other than MoCo/DC parents.
