Did people really used to punch each other at the sight of a Volkswagen Beetle in traffic?

No! What is the that game?

Monkey puzzle tree, grab your knee!

My sister hated this one because I was much better at spotting monkey puzzle trees than she was. Monkey puzzles trees are these ones: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araucaria_araucana

I love monkey puzzle trees. I wish we had them here!

Of course it's a real thing. My family also owns vintage VWs: bugs, buses, fastback, square backs, ghias. Only the original beetles count, not the newer redesigned bugs from 1997-2019.

We didn’t say the color. Punch bug no punch backs!

Upstate NY, class of 94. I’m pretty sure DH and I would still do it if we saw one today.

We did padiddle and padaddle. One was for a right light, one a left.

My kids still do this. We do their cousins.

+1 still do it!

Central NJ, class of 89, and we all played punch buggy and padiddle! Now I feel like I need to teach this to my kids!

Yes! Punch buggy no punch backs. Used to be three on our way to school usually (parked in streets and lots). We’d look out for them and try to be the first to spot.

LOL love that! Yes, did punch buggy as a teen in California in the 80s. Never heard of padiddle. I don't know why anyone would find punch buggy offensive. However, we also did "Chinese Fire Drill" which definitely is an offensive name. That's when you are stopped at a light and the passengers jump out of the car, run around it and try to get back in before the light turns green.

In addition to punch buggy, we also played WAG-AN-EAR. If you see a Jeep Wagoneer, then you pull on your earlobe, or your friend's earlobe (if they aren't driving). Carol Burnet style.

This is maybe the most pathetic reach I’ve ever seen trying to make the whole Everything is Sensitive point. And that really is saying something. Stay bothered!

Do you seriously think male relatives delivered "light taps on the arm" ?????

If you think so you are delusional.

yet we still manage to become normal people and contribute to society.

Punch bug! And yes, my brother and I did this, much to my parents dismay lol. It wasn't like a punched him in the face, just a light punch in the arm lol.

Yep—we’d yell slug bug! Or if it was a bus we’d yell double slug bug! We didn’t punch, but I know plenty of kids who did.

That's because you were IN the bug--I guarantee someone who saw your car from a car said it

This! Absolutely. You were causing people to get punched for years!

Punch Buggy!!!

Yup, punch buggy, never heard of Slug Bug. Now my kids play yellow car which not surprisingly also involves hitting people in the car.
