Did people really used to punch each other at the sight of a Volkswagen Beetle in traffic?

It was slug bug to us. I taught my kids to say “slug bug blue,” when the saw a VW Beetle, but I never clued them in to the hitting part because I didn’t want fighting.

I did this in the late 90s in high school. It was a light, soft cuff. I had a 1977 super beetle so it was cool to see other bugs. Total death trap but looked cool. My parents were the worst

My German family members do this, but not with VWs, rather with these little east german communist cars.

Punch buggy and, yes. Kids really used to do this.

Punch buggie, no punch back! So stupid, but we used to do it (86) too and my 18 yr. old daughter has done it for years, so clearly it's never really gone away.

Late 70s/early 80s PA/NJ here and we definitely did this. Mostly my brother and me in the back seat. "Punch buggy [color]!" And there'd be a reckoning if you forgot "No punch backs!"

Yup. Go ahead, act as if this is a problem, OP.

I’m also HS class of ‘93. We definitely did it in Upstate New York.

I wouldn’t advise visiting this little town.

Same here. But we didn't hit hard. Like a light push.

I still do, especially if you’re riding in my car.

Yes! We had a bug and did it all the time.

Shouldn't you be streaming Gen Z wimp rock on Spotify instead of posting on here with grownups?

I agree with the pp and I am a grown up!

I am the PP and I’m 50 years old so pretty damn grown up myself. I still hate any “game” that involves punching, hitting, mockery, bra snapping, etc. Really it was always pissy people doing it that then would say “oh, you can’t take a joke” if you said “hey—don’t hit me!” I weighed 90 pounds in in HS so maybe that was part of it, but I really do hate this kind of stuff.

You are insufferable

Wait—the part you think is insufferable is that I was small and weak in HS? I’m a solid 145 now in my dotage but still don’t like getting punched—sorry if that offends!
