Did people really used to punch each other at the sight of a Volkswagen Beetle in traffic?

Slug bug! Yes! then you punch your friend in the leg. It was mostly the guys that would punch each other.
We also did padiddle for seeing another car with one headlight out. Calling it first was good luck

Punch buggie! And, yeah, we walloped each other. To the point of bruising. I'm a girl. I have three brothers. It was a different time.

We definitely did this growing up.

We also played Padiddle....one headlight of a car coming at you and you yelled paddidle and hit the ceiling of the car. As teens it would allow us to kiss someone else in the car.

Same - we did both of these. One of our neighbors had an orange Beetle so my siblings and I punched each other a lot, LOL.

Yes with friends, a little punch on the arm usually, occasionally on the leg. "Punch buggy no return"

Yes! I'm 38. We did this in Los Angeles growing up.

Yup! HS class of '87 here. Punch buggy, no punch back! All my kids (now grown) also played it.

HS Class of '89- yes, we did this! Grew up in NoVA. Like another said, to the point of bruising your arm. My mom didn't allow it but my friends' moms did!

Personally, I'm no fan of it. But hey, those were the times.

We yelled "Punch bug!" and punched our siblings, and sometimes you'd do it with close friends. Totally normal, have no idea how this would be "offensive."
