Mary Cheh backs Tricia Duncan for Ward 3 Councilmember

Anonymous
Whether Beau Finley, who is running for DC Council, really lives mostly in DC is an open question. He calls himself the “only renter” in the Council race. He may rent a pied a terre in Cleveland Park, but he’s a single family homeowner in Charles County, Maryland. Perhaps not surprisingly, Finley has the highest percentage among the Ward 3 candidates of campaign contributions from outside Ward 3 and outside DC. It’s important to have a Councilmember who lives in DC enough to understand the public schools, infrastructure needs, crime, and other issues in the District.

What purpose does this guy’s candidacy serve at this point other than to siphon votes away from those who might otherwise beat Goulet?

#BreakingNews W3 CoMem Mary Cheh backs Tricia Duncan in crowded W3 race. “Many people have been asking me who I will vote for in the Ward 3 Council election. After looking at all of the candidates, many of whom I know personally, my choice is Tricia Duncan."
@politicshour

@wcp

Welp, at least I know who not to vote for...

I think you want to say that they won't give in to the NIMBYs in Foxhall who want to "protect" their neighborhoods (from public schools!!!). Cheh was an amazing Councilmember for our ward, and I can't wait to see Duncan follow in her footsteps. Duncan knows what fights you simply cannot back down from, and that is why she has not moved on the issue of building more public schools to fix overcrowding.

They want to live in a house on a large plot of land, away from neighbors, not use public transit, and drive all the time. It's also true about some of the further reaches of NW far away from Connecticut and Wisconsin. Do they understand what the rest of us want? The average ward 3 person lives near one of the main drags in an apartment or small house, possibly attached.

Again, unfair. Why are there so many candidates from the Palisades!

Not unfair at all. For me, the people who chose to live in Palisades chose to live on an island. Minimal public transportation, no public/subisidized housing - totally insulated from the rest of the city. Frankly, I think it takes a lot of hubris to be a Palisades resident, and think "oh hey, I head the Palisades Citizens Association so I am qualified to be a Councilmember: or "Hey I did my job for the city so I deserve to be a Councilmember" - NFW, these people have no tangible relevance to what the rest of us in the Ward or city want with city functions. Zero.

So for me, it is a matter of picking among the most viable of who remains. From there, the choice is easy, even if he isn't my top choice in the race.

This is silly. Tricia has done a lot as PCA President and through previous advocacy to address the issues you are complaining about. If she was a NIMBY, I’d agree with you, but she’s not. Only by progressive people moving into these areas and taking leadership roles can things change. For her efforts, Tricia has endured plenty of abuse from the NIMBYs. If you somehow believe that this makes her less qualified than someone who happens - by virtue of whatever circumstances - to live in a neighborhood where there is less scope to effect progressive change, then I’d encourage you to reevaluate your priorities.

Yes, she is leff qualified. Others in the race have concrete results in these areas. Ben Bergman led on the Tunlaw bike lanes; Beau Finley lead on CT Ave bike lanes and more density in Cleveland Park and Matt Frumin helped with the AU Law School and led on Wilson and Deal renovations as well as the Lisner affordable housing project. These people have TANGIBLE results. Tricia has a community association. Big whoop.

Ben Bergman did not do anything. He wasn't even on the ANC when the commission debated and voted on the bike lanes. His role is nil on this issue.

Untrue - I'm not voting for Ben but he was the one who got ANC 3D to support the proposal to add protected bike lanes to New Mexico Avenue and Tunlaw and he actually lives on NM and represents the folks who live on NM Ave so it did take a little bit of courage to do that as it will be removing parking on one side of the street.

Now it is true he was not on the ANC 10 years ago when the current unsafe bike lanes were supported by the ANC but he has actually spoken up at the 3D meetings that one of the reasons he supports protected bike lanes is because the current lanes are unsafe.

This os completely incorrect. ANC33D supported the New Mexico - Tunlaw bike lane in a lengthy resolution approved in September 2019. Ben joined the ANC in January 2021.

If Ben is claiming credit for this, it is undue.

Why would a supporter of Duncan remove them? It was free advertising for her.

Someone just shared photos of a city worker removing them. It wasn't anyone to do with Tricia Duncan.

And, yes, the signs helped make the case that one should be voting for Tricia Duncan. You can learn a lot about someone by the character and tenor of those attacking them.

What candidate was supposed to be the beneficiary of the signs? Goulet?

Hard to say. The Foxhallers were backing Goulet, but seem to have just figured out that his position on the schools changes depending on who he is talking to.

I'd love to know if Goulet has a kernel of actual beliefs inside him.

Speaking of which, they now seem to be gravitating towards Phil Thomas.

Who seems to be just as firm in his convictions as Goulet, but less abrasive.

The more I hear about the other candidates, the more I want to vote for Tricia Duncan. Phil Thomas seems nice, he knocked on my door, and we had a good conversation, but I'm not really sure he has a shot here. We need someone to beat Goulet. Tricia and Frumin are the only ones who seem capable of doing that, but Frumin's lack of support for the new elementary and high schools in Ward 3 makes me want to vote for Duncan.

Has Frumin said he doesn’t support the new high school?

That’s Goulet, I think. But who knows? Frumin’s position statements resemble a freely spinning compass. It will be interesting to hear what he has to say on the NIMBYs’ front lawn next Sunday. If he had any principles, he’d insist that it be a joint event with Tricia, but I guess that’s not how politics works.

Are you able to read? Frumin has had his position on the new schools up on his website since before the race was serious.

He also responds to emailed questions, unlike some other candidates.

This article utterly fails in taking a position on the schools. For Foxhall ES, he calls for looking at other options like expanding current schools (we have been doing that for decades in Ward 3 and we still need a new ES). For the high school in Palisades, he calls for engaging "the Hardy community and neighbors in the planning for how the school will work both programmatically and as part of the fabric of the community" before opening the school and allowing children to attend.

Community input is good. But we have had that for years on this issue, and this was the solution that the community came up with. This is our best shot at tackling overcrowding at Wilson and other schools in the ward, and it would be insane to walk it back now or wait any longer for more "input."
