Will Landon make any changes?

Out of the 700+ kids that go to Landon, how many actually are "part of the LAX culture?" Please. This is a ridiculously small percentage of an entire school population....a population that is filled with kids of all sizes, shapes and colors. Can't believe that the posters here really believe this small percentage of the entire student body is representative of all the many good kids who go to school at Landon. Not a Landon family, just someone that is reading this forum and stunned by the shocking group think....

It is difficult to understand the sway held by the lax culture at Landon. But it's very real. You are correct in saying that not all Landon boys are part of this culture. However the lax/athlete culture is so out of control that it influences so much of the day to day at the school. Add that to administrators who don't seem to care, parents who encourage this bad behavior and it soon dominates the culture. There are so many great kids at Landon. The school's reputation is swirling the drain and they are being held hostage by some really bad boys. Why doesn't the school act to get rid of these troublemakers?

My kid was not into lax, but did go to Landon. Lax parents can be obnoxious--they certainly were during the cheating scandal. One of them hi-jacked the senior/parent dinner by getting up on the stage to Damon Bradley's chagrin, and boozily implying that "everyone" knew who constituted the "real" heart of the school--you see the cheaters weren't getting awards they otherwise would have gotten. Those went to others--but you know what? There were so many things about that school that were positive. The teachers in fact are the real heart of the school. My son was so lucky to have had so many wonderful teachers there, men (and women) who never wanted or want to do anything but teach.

The teachers and administrators are really great; including the head of the Middle School, who we like a lot. Somebody on this board has it in for him.

I don't think anyone posting here truly believes that there aren't many great kids at Landon who are accepted into top-tier colleges and universities, but even if it's a small percentage of their students who are causing problems . . . there has to be something going on there to support the negative comments that appear in this forum and on several websites that rate schools. Any parent considering a good environment for their son(s) would have to ask why? Maybe Landon needs to consider getting rid of those who are causing the problems and not letting them remain there because they can afford the tuition or grandparents attended there, etc.

Things are very out of control in the MS. Landon needs to pay attention and make a change with the MS head.

Look at the bios of the Board. A bunch of them played lacrosse. The problems start at the top when the Board is comprised of rich, lacrosse playing (Republican -- had to say it) businessmen.

4 out of the 28 board members played lacrosse, i wouldn't say thats a lot at all? some of you mothers having nothing to do all day except sit around a computer and bitch about Landon, cant you find something better to do. Some of you must have a pretty boring marriage.

Apparently your marriage must be "pretty boring" too, since you're posting on this thread. Shouldn't you be snuggled up with your imaginary spouse right about now?

Wow. Reading through thread and not our experience. Our DS just started in the Lower School...couldn't be happier. He is not an uber athlete...he's into music, art and reading. He has been welcomed with open arms and we are very impressed.

FWIW, one of Landon's key music teachers also teaches with the Children's Chorus of Washington. My DD had him and loved him. We figured any kid at Landon who had him was really lucky.

Wait until high school . . .

PP, Please do not speak if you don't have first hand experience. I can bet that your child hasn't attended Landon at the Upper School. This year, the Upper School is definitely tightening up in terms of enforcement of rules. They are very strict in the smallest offenses this year. There is more of an understanding between the administration, faculty, and children who attend that the hands of Landon's reputation is in their hand. Kids have been drilled in that they must conduct in good behavior at all times because failure is not an option. Oh by the way, my DC is new to Landon's Upper School and has been welcomed with open arms as well. The school thus far seems to impress in all aspects of school life. The kids are confident, respectful, and fresh. When I say "fresh," I mean they walk out of the entrance of Landon that there is no option to act unmorally outside of school grounds.

Sorry, but you are hardly the expert on all things Landon with a child "new to the Upper School" for all of three weeks time. Glad you like it so far, and maybe they've turned things around--but the real test will be when a lax star or son of a big donor/Board member DOES get in trouble. Landon has always had the lofty rhetoric, but the school's actions have fallen short on more than one occasion. That may have changed, but the jury is still out at this point.

PP, I completely agree. From experience--what Landon says and what they actually do are two very different things.
