Notre Dame Prep is a Catholic girls school. It attracts a much different type of family and student than a school like Landon. NDP costs maybe $15K per year and the girls either come from public ES or from Catholic ES. Landon is not comparable really. It is for the ultra-rich. A comparable boys school to NDP might be Gonzaga. |
| He's not a "Landon kid"....he went there over 4 years ago. Why don't you call him a "Mater Dei kid"...he went there for 8 years. He is a UVA kid. Seriously. I am not connected to Landon, but this is getting ridiculous. Amazing that you appear to have decided that Landon is at fault for what this kid/man decided to do years after he left this area. Is St. Johns High School guilty because one of their kids was arrested for stock piling guns and allegedly plotting to use them on government officials? There may not always be a simple answer for why a kid goes bad....no matter how much everyone would love to have a knee jerk assignment of guilt. |
| "Ultra-rich" at Landon? What are you basing your information on? I know a number of kids that go there that are FAR from "rich" .... not to mention the high number of scholarship kids that go there. Not everyone who works hard to send their kid to Landon is an ultra-rich, preppy, family of a-holes.... |
| Amen. I am sick of all the Landon bashing. We have 2 kids in ps and they have a number of friends at Landon...great kids from good, nice "normal" families....sad that people want to bash an entire community for the actions of 1. |
| There are scholarship kids at every school. You mention Landon and people think $$$$$$$. |
| True. But you are right. There are scholarship kids everywhere and lots of hard working families that struggle to send their kids them. We have the good fortune of knowing alot of great kids that go to Landon. Landon is hardly the only high-priced private school in the area. |
| People on this board seem obsessed with Landon. I count 9 separate threads relating to Landon on the Private School site. This is just ridiculous. Most of the private schools in the DC area are expensive; most of them have a lot of wealthy families. There have been scandals aplenty at all these schools (including a Sidwell alum convicted of murder while in college), but Landon seems to press a lot of buttons for some of you. I think the combination of athletics and affluence has something to do with it. Look, there are lots of nice, smart, well behaved young men at the school, some of whom happen to be good athletes. There are some great teachers and administrators and nice families. And, as everywhere, there are some jerky kids and arrogant parents, some of whom are involved in lacrosse. The school is no training ground for thugs, and the many excellent colleges that accept their athletes and non-athletes seem to agree. |
| To answer OP -- no Landon will not change. It had the chance to change after the very public cheating scandal 7 or 8 years ago now. The story hit all of the papers and there was a huge story in the Washingtonian Magazine. Yet, the school was not shamed enough to make changes. Instead, the only boys kicked out from the group of 8 or so involved in the scandal were the non-lax players. I knew one of them. My husband was in banking with the mother. |

Interesting Washington Post column by Sally Jenkins writing about how certain "group cultures" (such as all-male athletic teams or military units) are more correlatednwith assaults on women. Asaults aside, I do think that people are questioning (hopefully with an open mind) whether Landon right now celebrates that group culture, perhaps to the detriment of some individuals. For example, taking the cheating case, do 10 kidsnon theirnown decide to cheat without the team dynamic pushing them into feeling it was okay? I don't think so. This doesn't mean Landon fosters cheaters or beaters, but that I think parents are still thinking about the atmosphere for their own child and whether it is as healthy as it could be. Many may conclude yes, others may seek a co-Ed school or a different all-boys option.

Yes, I suppose people are obsessed with Landon. Seems something is wrong there.Landon Links to SAT cheating, Duke
lacrosse and now the UVA murder. People have noticed. |
Landon was already in the Big 3. They should now be removed with these latest events. My vote is that they be replaced by St. Albans. |
While there are ultra-rich at Landon, that is certainly the exception, not the majority. I send my child to a $27K/year school. We are certainly not ultra-rich. |
What in the world are you talking about? Landon made sweeping efforts to change after the cheating scandal; they replaced their headmaster, the upperschool head, and the middle school head among other various changes. |
