He also spent more time at mater dei than he did at landon and uva combined.

Ah, but did GH play lacrosse at Mater Dei and, if he did, is it anything like the teenage lacrosse culture that one sees at Landon and UVA?

Yes and yes.

Yes, but LAX is Landon's culture and selling point.

Right. We have not seen any Mater Dei lacrosse alums in the news for bad acts.

Landon, unlike Mater Dei, is all about lacrosse.

Not completely true.

It's the Landon culture.

I don't think the whole culture is like that

Full disclosure is that I'm an 1980s Landon Alum, and played LAX there. I remember when Landon responded to the SAT issue. I was impressed that they changed the leadership and embarked on quite an extensive ethics review. The board and the new leadership took the issue quite seriously, and that impressed me. I don't know, however, what kind of review or policy changes are even possible for responding to this murder.

I disagree with many of the comments that want to lay blame on LAX or Landon. I don't think you can lay blame on any institution for the acts of one man. The blame for Love's death lies only with HG. Because, you can rewrite mission statements, policies, and curricula all you want, but that would not have changed one thing.

I have no doubt that the friends and adults in HG's life are reeling and wondering how they missed signs, or whether they could've/should've done something different. Only those individuals will know, and I wouldn't presume to offer advice.

Also, to those pointing fingers at anyone other than HG. Be careful. Because that could be the behavior that leads most to these kinds of tragedies, and I think it happens all too often today. We shift blame from the perpetrator to the institutions with whom they're associated. We all want to find the reason... the cause... the 'who else is to blame.' Most often, it's simply the one who did the deed.

Except for George Huguely...

Earlier someone posted that they have seen the Landon community come together over family crises. As a Landon parent of several boys I have witnessed this a number of times. A few years ago the father of some Landon kids died young of cancer. The Catholic funeral was filled to overflowing with Landon kids, teachers, etc. At communion time they all got up to go thinking that is what they should do (actually it is not; you are supposed to be Catholic.) Later on the officiating priest said to me that he knew they could not all be Catholic, but he didn't know what else to do in those circumstances but to keep giving out communion--and it was a very moving sight.

Maybe some of the Landonians on this site will take heart from this--there was a recent ivy league reunion and I had a chance to ask a notable administrator who has a lot of admissions input how the GH thing might affect Landon admissions. He said he has tried unsuccessfully several times to get people to address it--(he is from here.) To the extent it is on people's radar screen at all they see it as a UVA issue--as in how is UVA dealing with this...where GH went to high school seems to be a Washington pre-occupation. One person from NYC vaguely aware of the murder at UVA wanted to know if this murder was like the Preppie murder in Central Park. I think we are a bit self-focused here assuming the rest of the country sees things the way we do.

My family loves the Landon Head of the Middle School -- lay off. He is of very high moral character and an outstanding role model for my ds. DS does not go to Landon. His advice on has been very sound. He has never turned a blind eye to my own son's nor his classmates misbehavior. And I thank him for that. He is an amazing role model. Detractor, go meet with him face-to-face and talk about your issues. I don't think I would consider sending my DS to Landon if he was NOT there. I am shocked to read people/person is gunning for him on these Landon threads. Truly an amazing person!

I, along with many parents have met with the Landon Head of Middle School. About a few of the slampig boys, as a matter of fact. He had several chances to deal with these kids and chose to do nothing. He should be fired.

To the poster that claimed no one from Mater Dei ever did anything wrong. Did you know George Hugeley went to Mater Dei for 8 years?
