The OP's thread is stupid and implies a false truth: that some universities have gone down in stature

I remember the days when colleges like Cornell and Brown were considered safeties

Today you have schools like VT and UMD or USC and UCLA that are great colleges and probably have equivalent student quality to some of the elites from back in the day

If anything, colleges in the US have all grown in stature and a top 100 college today is probably of equal or similar stature to a 20 college from decades ago

Colgate has risen so fast. I’m hearing acceptance rate is around 12% for 2026.

I do feel like as universities in the US became increasingly liberal some of the ones that had once distinguished themselves for their progressive reputations no longer stood out as much and declined - Hampshire, Oberlin, Reed, and Wesleyan, in particular.

But of course it’s the lower tier of SLACs and state schools that are struggling the most to attract students and stay afloat these days.

Wrong direction when applications are at an all time high and the Ivies are in single digits.

Opposite is true. It's gotten more prestigious and competitive. Previous 10 years, admit rate was 40s/50s%. In the 30s this year.

What's the source for admission rate in the 30s?

UMD expanded its undergraduate class over the past 10 years by about 7k. Now it's in line with the Big 10 universities, Berkeley, UCLA, etc.

This is after the president in the 2000's did everything he could to reduce enrollment by 10k to improve competitiveness.

Nope, UMCP acceptance rate right now, is at 51%

Faber college has really gone downhill since the Delta Tau Chi was put on double secret probation.

But they shouldn’t give up. Nothing is over. Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
