| I gained about 20 pounds but then I lost more than 50, so this was a good wakeup call to me. |
No, just talking about two extremes. |
|
Oh my god. Not 5'3 and over 170! How horrifying! (Insert eyeroll here)
Seriously- it has absolutely no effect on your life. MYOB and stop being judgy. |
|
5'2 Lost 30, gained 10 lb during the last 2 months.
I lost most of it running, which it was too cold for me to do. And the gyms were very different then what I was used to. Either they were very specialized, or mainly for 1:1 support. |
| I'm sure a lot of people did gain weight during lockdown. it's amazing how bad and junky the diet of the average American is. So disgusting, no wonder people are packing on pounds |
| I gained probably 10 lbs from not walking/moving as much due to WFH. Then I had a baby. Baby is now 4 months old and I have 18 lbs to lose to get back to 135 (I'm 5'7"). So I'm not obese but I've definitely gained weight and I would like to lose it so my clothes fit. |
| Yes, sadly I gained about 20 pounds during covid, but am in the process of losing it. |
|
I gained about 20.
Most of my friends did too. We're also all 47-52 so it wasn't great timing for going through menopause. |

OP, you're just an all-around shallow thinker if you couldn't figure out any number of ways your hypothesis could possibly be flawed before you posted it. How embarrassing for you.
Some other PPs covered a lot of it. -You're comparing movie stars from the 70s and 80s to people you saw out on St. Patrick's Day 2022. -People in the 70s and 80s were "way healthier," is that so? No smoking (which kills the appetite), no drugs, longer life expectancy? Fascinating conclusion. -You were shocked that people gained a ton of weight specifically in 2 years, then compared them to people 40-50 years ago. Yes, yes-- you're saying we were already fat, and now have gotten even fatter. But really, you're just throwing everything in to draw your conclusion about the lazy, disgusting, low-class and possibly immoral fatness of the American public. You started out by asking if and how people gained weight between 2020 and 2022, and your conclusion was that Americans were much healthier in 1977. Hm. -By your own admission and by implication, you have not been out and about that much in 2 years. Your memory may be failing you and your smaller circle of friends/media influence may have distorted it. -Yes, the average person did gain weight during COVID, because they became less active, were more likely to be stressed/depressed, etc. Many even lost loved ones! -Some people also... had COVID. And those who got it before having been vaccinated, especially, are more likely to have had their activity level and diet impacted by a more serious case of it-- either for a short time (but impact habits longer term) or for a longer time. I had a friend who needed months to regain her lung capacity. |
| Most people are SO FAT. Over 70% of Americans are fat. That is absolutely INSANE. And a big chunk are obese too. Horrifying. |
| It's also the worst possible time of the year at the end of winter, when most people are at their heaviest. If people are moving less because of WFH, they move even less at this time of year when it's cold and dark and people don't get outside as much. |
| Yes! |

I lost 10 pounds during Covid because I have so much more time to exercise and cook. But I'm not going out drinking, eating inside restaurants, or socializing either. Rands to reason the people out drinking and eating inside on St. Patrick's day may be making different health choices.
I also think OP has been watching too much TV with fit people onscreen. tV and movies really don't reflect what people really look like anymore. I'm still overweight, just less overweight than I was before. |
| I gained during the pandemic. I used to go to Orange Theory every day after work. Then it closed so I started running every day instead. I ended up with a severe hip problem from doing this that will just not get better. Now I ride a stationary bike, but it's been a slow road to my normal weight. |
| I don't think so. I weigh two pounds less than I did in March 2020 but I used the time working at home to exercise more. |
