What is the allure of Cornell?

For decades, all the men in my family, from my great-grandfather on down, went to Cornell. They women went to Cornell also when it accepted women. It's our family school!

But not any more. Tuition is too high. And it's now really difficult to get in. My grandfather got gentleman's C's.

My neighbor's kid went to Cornell. 4.0 student, squash player, got in early. Going to med school now. Just sayin'

It has accepted women since 1870 so…

He loves the cold and refused to consider warm weather schools. Cornell is consistently ranked #1 in undergraduate for his program (architecture). It is absolutely world class. He feels lucky to be there.

My husband went to Cornell for architecture eons ago and waxes rhapsodic about that place. I've always been skeptical, being an urbanite, and I secretly don't want our DC to go into architecture (such a tough field!), so it's nice to hear that Cornell is still good experience

I went there and really enjoyed it. There were lot of other students from NYC (I am originally from Queens) and lots of other students from middle class families (due to the reduced tuition and the public schools within Cornell). It was easy to make friends that I could relate to, it provided a good education, and I was able to get a good job afterwards.

It's a tier above Michigan. Rich California, New England or Tri-State prep schooler love Cornell. Cornell rejects end up at Michigan, Wisconsin and GW.

For which college do you claim this is the case?

Apparently Cornell is great for food allergies.

What does it have going for it? People clearly go there and enjoy it but I am wondering what attracts them.

I think just the fact that it’s an Ivy which admits a large number of applicants and offers lower tuition to state residents, helps draw a huge number of applicants to apply. It has a high suicide rate either equal or higher than U Penn.

From its founding, actually. It’s always accepted women. While I agree the tuition increases have been ridiculous, I kinda have to doubt pp’s story if she didn’t know that basic fact about the school.

Wow it's impressive how much false and/or misleading information you were able to pack in to just two sentences!

I have no dog in the fight but it is ranked higher than the vast majority of universities in America, OP + it has excellent career outcomes. So, I have to ask... where did you go that you think you are so special + above the fray?

I suspect that the allure is that it is ranked in the top 25 universities in the world in every single ranking that you can find.

I think for high stats HS students who are shooting for the stars, they do risk analysis. Within ivies, what school is the easiest to get in? If they get in to Cornell - they still won a lottery.
