What is the allure of Cornell?

It’s much easier to get into than the other Ivies so for people focused on attending an Ivy, Cornell is a logical choice.

My child had no interest in being in a city, wanted to be well north of DC, is a CS major which is a very strong program. It has been a great choice.

Ivy status was not important. We visited Princeton and knew they knew they would never apply before we got back in the car. Like the Cornell vibe better.

Ithaca is lovely...I would never describe it as bleak.

Hmm....Cornell is an Ivy and T20 university. That's why.

I think Cornell was the only Ivy I even applied to, and in large part I chose because I had no idea whatsoever what I wanted to do. There is something to be said for a school where you have access to vet, med, law, business, hotel, ag, engineering, textiles, plus all the liberal arts in one campus. Not saying it’s better or worse, but it is why I chose it! Even as an undergrad, the opportunities to take classes or do research or work in such a wide range of things was so appealing.

Neither is Princeton and I’d rather be in Ithaca than Philadelphia. OP isn’t terribly bright.

My kid is at Cornell. It was his absolute dream school (although i usually avoid using that phrase). He loves the town and the area. He loves the cold and refused to consider warm weather schools. Cornell is consistently ranked #1 in undergraduate for his program (architecture). It is absolutely world class. He feels lucky to be there.

Cornell is a fabulous school. That’s the allure!

Princeton is in a bustling area easily accessible to NYC and Philly.

Bleak? Do you consider beautiful fall foliage and lakes and scenic gorges bleak?
Ithaca is one of the most beautiful towns in the country.

We used to run from campus to the lake to row (rowed crew in college.)
There's also great biking, and a short drive away one can hike and cross country ski. I didn't take advantage of the latter because I didn't have a car. But I was kept busy with school and school activities and didn't miss it. Kids don't go to college to take advantage of big city life. That's for post-college, single life in your 20s.

Upstate New York is incredibly haunted and bleak in many places.

But at least he doesn't fall for obvious trolling.

I agree - many places in upstate NY are bleak, but Ithaca is not one of them. Not sure about being "haunted", though.
