DCPS HS Interviews

How does the GPA cutoff affect low income kids? Do that have special set asides or a lower cutoff for lower income
Kids or kids of color?
Anonymous
There is nothing in the official policy that says there are any set asides.

Why would the GPA cutoff affect low income kids? Is the implication that if you are low income you can’t have a high enough GPA? I hope I am misinterpreting the question.

Why would there be a lower cutoff for kids of color? My Black child has a 4.0 from an Upper NW middle school (every term since 6th grade). That is not the case for many of her white classmates—perhaps they need some “special set asides.” My daughter is whipping their behinds academically, and she knows it.

They should do school-based quotas like TJ does. This kid doesn’t need a leg up. But at a citywide level, it seems like the sky-high GPA cut off must favor white kids, because Walls turned majority white right after they dropped the test and adopted the GPA system.

Um... because nobody is making a city-wide policy that only takes into account your one kid?

+1....My little lady is all about her business and understands the stakes. Don't want anything special-just the opportunity.

They don't have a sky high GPA, and didn't they just ditch the test last year? So a bit early to determine effect, especially with a fancy Banneker opening up just down the road.

Thanks for posting. Can I ask who the email came from and what your kid’s GPA is? I think my kid should get an interview but have heard nothing. Am paranoid I’ll miss the email….

Walls did not ‘turn white’ after ditching the test. They ditched the test last year. It has always had a GPA cutoff. It became a much whiter school when the test was implemented and when the city as a whole became more white. There are some demographic changes at play here. But PP clearly doesn’t have any clue what they are talking about.

Also just as a side note- kids in low income schools can get 4.0s as well. The grades across the board are incredibly inflated- so it’s not just your previous Deal kids who can get As.

I'm the poster above. My child also says she/he is not interested in interviewing. Grades were 4.0 at DCPS middle school. 9th grade first quarter were 2 A+, 2 A, 1 B+ Not sure how a GPA is calculated out of that.

They calculate the final grades of the previous school year, not 1st quarter grades.

Who is the email coming from for the Walls interviews? We received an email saying DC made the cut off and we have heard nothing since. I have checked my junk folders.

DC had a 3.7 for 7th grade.
