I figure the February break meant everything was stalled for a week.

Sorry. I meant the email from Walls saying you did not make the cut for the interview.

What was your child’s 7th grade GPA.

Below 3.6. Is there anyone who has not yet received an email from Walls? Either “your GPA entitles you to an interview,” or “your GPA is too low but thanks for applying”?

Has anyone heard anything from McKinley? Are they doing interviews?

I just called Banneker and apparently, they are still going through applications there were 1000+ applications.

Anyone know how this compares to previous years? I know among my child’s friends it is a top choice for several.

As I suspected, Hopefully they are getting some assistance in the process. Has to be overwhelming for a small school.

Not surprising.

Wilson is a sh$%T show and parents are looking for any other option. St. Johns also had record number of applications and many were from Deal parents trying to escape Wilson.

Additionally, here are the numbers for students left on the 9th grade waitlist at Walls for the same years:

40

I wonder are the applicant numbers at Walls down compared to previous years....

I increasingly think the match/waitlist system is a terrible mechanism for deciding who attends these magnet high schools. For one thing, it starts too early. (Only first quarter 8th grade grades!) And then it goes too late. (Last year Walls made 45 offers after June.) The numbered waitlist forces schools to not just admit and reject but to prioritize students at an absurdly granular level. There’s no school with the resources to do that rationally. And then each waitlisted kid will learn their exact value to the school, at a time in life when they’re least able to cope with that information. AND it makes no room for students to prioritize friendships, which is often the single most important consideration for kids this age. There’s a reason colleges and private high schools do this in tranches, making predictions about yield, rather than using this type of waitlist.

This is NOT apples to apples. In previous years, Walls only interviewed the top 250 test takers so virtually everyone got off the wait list. Starting last year, they "interviewed" the top 500 GPAs so there were TONS more on the waitlist to begin with...

Apparently Walls is a s***show this year too so Bannkers numbers are up...
