Why do people think it's okay to let their dog shout at people who walk by?

That depends. If the dog started barking the second my dog started squatting to poop, we may be there a while til I finish picking up after my dog.

Haha cue the people mad that your dog is pooping in their lawn too. But really, does it happen THAT often that your dog is pooping on a lawn so you’re stuck at a house for 20 seconds while a dog is barking at you from INSiDE their house and then you get so mad about you being barked at that you post in DCUM? This is not what people are complaining about.

Dog barking aggressively at every passerby while out in a yard? Yeah that’s a problem. Dog barking incessantly all day while neighbors can hear? That’s a problem. Dog barking for ten seconds when the mailman comes to the door? So incredibly common and really tough to train out (ask me how I know).

Yeah, don't poop on my lawn either. If it's not public property or yours, don't poop there.

You don’t even own the strip of grass in between the sidewalk and the street right in front of your own house, let alone the strip across the street. My dog is free to poop there, and I am responsible for picking it up and properly disposing of it.

The dogs are protecting their territory.
The right answer here is to walk on by and then the dog is a good boy who defended his turf. That’s his whole raisin d’être. Stop making this about you, Barb.

The 10 pound lap dog that goes insane when my 75 pound dog and I are across the street, two houses over and walking away doesn’t understand that we’re not in his territory, and he has provided no actual defense. We’re not a threat and if we were, that little fluff ball couldn’t stop us anyway. He’s barking at us because he’s reactive and stressed out by how outmatched he’d be if he had to take on my dog for some reason. Meanwhile, my dog is silently wagging his tail in an attempt to be friendly.

Loud, aggressive barking is always miserable to listen to, no matter where your dog is.

Dogs don't judge size. A JRT can outface a bear. That 10 lb terrier can outface your lab.

PP who thinks that Lap Dog isn't defending his turf is not that bright. Heck yes, he's barking to scare you and your stupid 75 lb doofus off. He's not necessarily reactive and stressed, oh Pet Therapist. If he could get free he'd TAKE YOU OUT.

Then it should be euthanized.

All terriers should be euthanized? What?!?

Just don't go into their house unauthorized. You'll be fine.

Not all terriers; dogs that would TAKE OUT nearby pedestrians if they ever got out.

Our rescue lab mix has barked at the mail person every day since we got her with out fail 8 years ago. She also went after a man who tried to come in our house after my husband had forgotten to lock the door. Soooo no I'm going to train her out of her barking to protect us. Tough!

My dog doesn't "shout". She barks when strangers come near our house, and I'm glad she does. I like it that people can see there is a dog inside who is protecting the house.

Dogs bark at strangers because they are protecting their families. This is instinctual--there's nothing wrong with that. Bark collars are cruel, and you shouldn't crate or leash your dog as punishment. If you're crate training your dog, it's the worst idea to have the dog associate the crate with punishment.

Barking at people approaching the property is one of the main reasons people have dogs.

Don't want to be barked at? Take a different route.

There is a lot of positive feedback for the dog, too. In their heads, they bark and people (eventually) move on so barking works! It is really hard to train out of them because of their natural territorial behavior.

Actual letter carrier here. So, I don't mind the dogs that bark when I walk up on the porch-if they are inside, they are not threatening me.

I do have a couple who not only bark, but bodily fling themselves at the door and windows as I deliver their mail. THAT is weird. I take it as aggression. One broke out a pane of glass one day. I've had a coworker have a dog crash through a glass storm door-injuring both the mailman and the dog. I don't understand why people keep aggressive dogs like this! The ones whose dog broke the pane of glass, they just had a baby, and they've got that aggressive dog in there with her.

That is really scary. I’m sorry you have to deal with this.

Isn't that one of the top reasons people own a dog?

OP, you sound really, really, really high maintenance.

Maybe stop teasing your neighbor's dog?

I feel like there is the same post on this same subject every month. Give it up already, get a hobby or something.

Our mailman carries a big box of treats. You can see it in his mail truck as he passes. Smart guy!
