THey must give 24h notice for teachers to prep. That means the closure can't be a snow day--it has to be a working day.

So they would have had to make today a teacher work day? So they could not do virtual on Wednesday now either because tomorrow is a closure? Not sure I understand.

I would prefer my kids play in the snow tomorrow than have virtual school

They have all day today and tomorrow is going to be messy. And the clock is ticking down on the AP exams. I could understand this perspective for elementary kids but it just creates problems for the older kids. Do high school parents really prefer closures to virtual? Or is it mainly little kid parents on here?

That’s my understanding. Teachers get a day of work too plan a transition to virtual. If schools are closed, then it isn’t a work day to prepare

Parents had a fit about virtual... next time think before you speak.

This is true. There are parents who will not allow their children to participate in virtual learning of any kind. There are parents who kept their children home the few days before break and would not come to school to pick up Chromebooks or curriculum materials.

Those are the parents (as you read here in comments) who also don't report when the students have Covid and are likely to send them to school no matter what. They have no concern for the safety of their fellow students or the teachers and staff. The numbers are way under reported and McNight seems to want it that way. McNight is letting these selfish parents dictate the health and safety of our students and teachers (and community).

As a parent - I hope teachers know that we support you and really empathize with what you are going through. You didn't sign up for this mess. Why are teachers the ones who have to clean up the mess everyone else creates (students, admin, parents, local and state government)? I don't know how you are all hanging in there but thank you.

What about the opposite - students and teachers reporting they have COVID when they really don’t? A positive test result is not asked to document. Everything is on the honor system so numbers can be way over reported to try to get MCPS to go virtual.

Congrats, you've won the craziest thing I've read today award. How would that work, exactly? They would all have to return in 10 days anyway. Are you are suggesting a coordinated plot of thousands?

You could easily imagine staff doing that.

And there are a handful of parents that didn't want to send their kids back. Faking a positive COVID test could help their kids avoid missing school.

Based on self reported positives over break. How scientific. This is why you don’t report positives over break people. Force MCPS to start counting in January. By the time you are close to 5% peak will have passed, thus avoiding a closure. Stop letting MCPS get away with closing schools people.

You do realize you are a really bad person, right? The selfishness of not reporting is infuriating. You are somehow above any rules I guess. People like you are the reason it's spreading. I can only hope that people like you are the ones getting bad cases and not those who do all they can to stay safe and protect others. I bet you also don't wear a mask and think Covid is just a cold (that has killed millions - oh wait - you don't think that's real. It's the media, right? That and Sandy Hook conspiracies are running through your head because there is clearly a lot of empty space in that skull)
You clearly need an education and FOX is making you sound like an absolute idiot.

There's no reason to report a case that wasn't contracted at school or ever brought to school. Assuming they don't go to school while infectious, not reporting that case only hurts the student, while benefiting the other students who have a stronger chance of being able to stay in school. Parents acting solely in the interest of their child would want to report cases in hopes of shutting down the school, since otherwise the student would miss a week or more of class.

Credit is due where its due. MCPS communication has improved after the holidays and I think their proactive approach and prompt communication to keep the community informated and engage parents deserve a lot of appreciation.

I am literally getting deja vu with this weather and I bet they are going to close schools indefinitely and say they will reevaluate when it is safe to open and it will be like, July! I am going to go and drink a whole bunch until I cannot remember being on this forum.

Seriously, people should stop having 3 kids. These are the neediest and whiniest parents who expect others to raise their kids. JUST. STOP.

Fecking irresponsible animals!!

Seriously. When they outnumber you, it becomes exponentially harder. Who doesn’t know this?

Agreed. I hated getting the school closure notice at 4 am the day of. At least now we can make some alternate arrangements.

If your kid didn’t learn anything “all year,” yes, that would be your responsibility. Do better.

Because virtual school is horrible, we all know it, you know, everyone knows it.

Wrong.

because 2 weeks isn't sufficient time for the rates to drop.

It’s enough to contain the spread from all the vacations, travel, family gatherings and large indoor parties people went to during break. Incubation averages for Omicron are quicker.

This. The only time I have seen a family do ok with three kids (2 were unexpected twins), is when there were two healthy, relatively young, devoted grandparents, who lived close by and were able to provide reliable care 24/7/365 in the mix. 3 kids means you are drowning...

Nope. The last time MCPS shut down for 2 weeks, schools didn’t open again for 1.5 years. I don’t trust them to reopen.

I didn’t think anybody really believed in March 2020 that the closure was going to be for two weeks only. I guess paranoia comes with the inability to grasp the situation.

Agreed, and *technically* they did reopen, albeit virtually, after those two weeks, and made up most of the missed days.

You left out the part where they only taught half of what should’ve actually been instructed had the children been in person. But why let facts get in the way.

Yawwwwwwnnnnnn.

You can use your own computer. You don't need an MCPS computer to do virtual.

You don’t understand. There are parents who refuse to allow their children to participate in any type of virtual learning. As in, their child had to unfortunately quarantine (child was not sick) and the parents refused to have their child log into virtual learning with the rest of the class. It’s not about having access to a device. There are parents who are adamantly against ANY type of virtual learning. They absolutely will not allow it to happen.

Sorry for their kid. If that becomes ongoing, CPS should be called.
