Haven't read any responses, but I read in an article that in the book, it delved deeper into Leda's past in that her family or her neighbors were in the Mafia and always very threatening to her, and Nina's family- which is clearly supposed to have Mafia ties- reminds her of that and is supposed to bring all of this tension and fear into the movie.

And I assumed Lyle said that because he saw the looks, and knew she had the doll.
