LOL what academic? USC has a very good engineering school, serious business school while still placing a huge emphasis on liberal arts education. It's Cinematic Art school actually makes a tremendous impact in the industry with alumnis like George Luka, Ron Howard (I can go on and on) who make bg donations to the school. USC has much bigger research funding and activities. USC is a nationally and internationally well recognized top school. Tuft is just a bigger version of a nice LAC doing good on Pre-Med? Nobody knows and cares about Tufts outside of the Boston area.Boston college is probably better known. Last year USC was ranked 24 and Tufts was 30. This year the raking gap happened to be narrowed, but USC has been lower to mid 20s and Tufts has been upper 20's Ask anyone in LA, it's on top of their school list. Ask anyone in the US, most of them would choose USC especially after they visit both schools. (yes my faily visited both schools last Spring) |
USC/Georgetown > Tufts/NYU |
USC has been over ranked by US news for a while. It's back to where it should be. Both Tufts and USC have it's strengths and weaknesses. |
Delusional... Georgetown is still better than those schools. |
No it's under ranked this year. |
Its a decent school and I’sure many are there by choice but most are Ivy rejects chasing prestige. |

While USC is a fine school - and indeed deserves all the accolade referenced above, that only makes it a more known school - not a “better” one. The reality is USC is a huge draw in SoCA, perhaps close behind Stanford, UCLA, and Cal for CA residents. Otherwise, it’s seen as a respectable but nothing special school for extremely affluent over privileged kids (reminder, it was a top destination in the parents bribing for admissions scandal). The amount of money USC invests in reputation advancing (vs mission advancing) is an obscene waste.
Also - and this is always the challenge with Tufts - comparing Tufts to any of these schools is comparing apples and oranges. Tufts is a SLAC that also has an engineering school and some excellent graduate schools. Yes, it’s a University, but not in the same way as a NYU, Georgetown, or USC. They are just different types of schools. Those actually affiliated with Tufts know this to be the case. This thread reads as if the majority of people commenting on it have no understanding of Tufts or it’s appeal. My best guess is the negativity comes from two types of DCUM participants - those who are going through the college search with their own child and frustrated and needing to vent (I get it, this is a tough admissions season) and those with an ax to grind who may, or may not, have anything to do with the actual school being discussed. |
No I think you are just biased. Actaully top destination has benn probably the UC public schools - UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, etc. https://www.insider.com/uc-inappropriately-admitted-64-wealthy-students-six-years-2020-9 Also top shcools like Stanford Yale Georgetown were all involved in the type of scandal.. USC has very diverse body of students which makes very interesting. Yes it includes some of those affuent privileged kids, but if you look at the top schools, you can easily find previlleged rich legacy kids. My kid is in honors program at USC, but many students my kid encounterd have been very independent and mature. My kid learned a lot and influenced by those kids. |
Tufts/Georgetown > USC/NYU |
Given 95% of IVY applicants are rejected, I would submit that most T30 schools are filled with "ivy rejects" What a stupid statement. |
| No Tufts isn't there either . Georgetown> the others. |
| Tufts boosters, a question: why is the school named Tufts? It's such an unfortunate name. Like Mange University or Patches University. |
| ok this has gone off the rails |
Agreed. I wish I knew the reason. Jealousy of some form definitely plays a role. |
No clue, but there was a great College Confidential thread years ago where the OP asked people to name the silliest reasons their kid had given for rejecting a school. One of the posters loved Tufts, but it was a no go for her son who said the name weirded him out because “Tufts of what, exactly?” There were lots of funny examples. Another kid refused to consider Colgate due to the toothpaste connection, and one girl wrote off a school because she didn’t like the tour guide’s shoes. |
