Around here, it's ridiculous to establish such a blanket rule of indoors only November through March. There are so many sunny 60-degree days during those times. The current APS guidelines of 45 degrees (or whatever it is) and precipitation for outdoor recess should easily cover actually eating outdoors as well. It's not like the kids are spending more than 5 or 7 minutes eating anyway. |
How many days have been 35 degrees during lunch hours so far this school year? I'm going to take a wild guess and say ZERO. |
Please clarify why recess is fine but eating is not? |
+1 APS’ approach for eating outside for lunch is very reasonable. And it’s great that kids are getting more time outside. The PP complaining about outside lunch is totally nutters. |
Do you usually eat and run at the same time? People tend to feel a lot warmer when they are moving around vs sitting still. |
Have none of you ever sat in a normal APS elem cafeteria during lunch time? Pandemonium, loud, jostling and crowded.
Picnic eating outside sounds like a better experience in all regards, fresh air, calmer, more space, no jostling. Let alone the public health aspect. You can't really afford to do "choose your lunch options" they can't even let them chose to sit at their own tables (its too crowded and hectic), letting the kids run wild in and out is nonstarter. |
The op isn't anti-outdoor lunch they are just pro-telling-ppl-what-to-do what a softy |
Perhaps there is a school by school issue going on. My kid sits on a mat outside is very uncomfortable and reports hard to eat lunch. I’m all for outdoor lunch when possible but would like my kid to be able to eat inside when it’s below 50. Y’all crazy. Recess (running heart rate up) not the same thing. I love being outside and active right now, but want to eat inside unless uncharacteristically warm The point is kids are vaxxed, covid is here to stay, so let’s stop the charade. |
It's going to be 39 degrees at lunch time today. I invite all of these "kids must be forced to eat outdoors because my family is part of the tiny minority that doesn't eat indoors at restaurants" nuts to please go outside for 1 hour today during lunch. Eat your lunch outside and then hang out outside afterwards too.
In 20 years, people are going to laugh so hard about the hysteria of these nutters wanting to force kids to eat outside in freezing cold weather. They'll laugh even more too because COVID will still be here in 20 years. In fact, when I tell people who don't have kids here about this, they're already laughing. |
I eat on the run all the time. ![]() Seriously, I think you're misguided in thinking little kids are spending 20 minutes sitting and calmly eating their lunches. A lot of parents complain their kid is wolfing down their lunch in 5 minutes so they can run around and play. If a school is making all the kids sit until everyone has been served and finished like they do for indoor lunch, then that school needs to change its ways. Do you take your kids to outdoor sporting events in the fall and winter and early spring months? I recall some pretty darn wet and COLD soccer games for mine; and they aren't all on the field at the same time - some are standing (gasp!) on the sideline in the cold rain/even snow, waiting for their turn to go onto the field. I guess Child Protective Services should be called for all those parents letting their kids play little league baseball and dragging those little siblings to the games that can be quite chilly and windy, too. Talk about sitting around! there's a lot of sitting and standing around in baseball. Ever take your kid somewhere where they have to stand in line for a while in the cold? Nobody ever takes their little kids to Wolftrap for the Marine Band holiday concert.....to sit in the cold in the middle of a crowd with nowhere to go or move around? Inhumane to take little kids to a high school football game where they sit on cold open metal stands with wind and cool/cold night temperatures? Heckuva lot longer time to sit in the cold not moving around. Ever consider that your kid gets much colder spending an hour or more outside on snow days sledding -- and moving around -- than during the max 10 minutes eating their lunch outside on a dry 50-degree day? If you're guilty of any of these things or anything similiar, shame on you! You are an abusive parent and have ruined your child for life. You have no concern for the physical well-being of your own child. And if you haven't dared to speak up to stop others doing the same to your children, that's just unbelievably ignorant and narcissistic. |
Good news for the anti-outdoor parents - it’s going to be in the 50s and 60s next week. Your precious snowflakes may not even need a coat.

FCPS ES schools have been eating indoors since September and have very few Covid cases. I can't believe entire schools of children are being forced to eat lunch outside in the cold. Wow. Arlington is crazy. |
I ate outside multiple times last year (we met friends at the Park during the week). We have even eaten outside in the snow! We also go on winter hikes and my kids play polar football and baseball. I just went 45 minutes outside for the bus (which was late).. It's fine. Guys when will you understand that we prove of outdoor lunch regardless of covid. |
Go away. Crazy FCPS has a separate forum now. |
These Bro dads and Trumo Moms are hilarious. They are ok with winging their kids safety with no masks, but afraid of some cold air? It's an extra 15-20 mins outside. Kids have always been doing recess in winter. These people! |
