No.

My British dh's mother is Catherine. My grandmother is Catherine. And we know three other British Catherines.

As much as I hate the fawning over royalty, note that Kate Middleton's name is Catherine.

And Wuthering Heights' two heroines are named Catherine, so clearly Catherine with a C is not a new British trend in spelling.

You Americans and your crazy ideas about what is "British"...

Kathryn originated in my Polish immigrant family when Americans couldn't be bothered to correctly pronounce Katarzyna. Nice to know that 50 years later the class judgement is still holding strong.

My aunt's name is spelled Kathryn for a similar reason - my grandmother is from Austria and if the name was spelled Katherine/Catherine it would be pronounced with four syllables in German and my grandparents wanted my father & aunts' names to be pronounced (sort of) the same in both English & German.

Like I said upthread, there’s a Western European bias.

'Kevin' has a horrible connotation in the UK/Ireland right now, and has for years. It's a distinctly down-market name there. "Kevin the teenager" was named this for a reason.

I lived in the UK for many years with my British dh. Trust me on this one. No one in the UK sees Kevin as classic.

Anonymous wrote:Catherine! Can be shortened to “Cat” or “Cate” or “Caite”. Probably depends on other names and what initials would be / what monogram you like better.

I think it depends on whether you will be using a nn. Katherine if your want Kate or Katie. Catherine for Cat. Cate and Caite are not typical spellings (though some people like to choose the unusual way)

I think Cate Blanchett did okay for herself.

So has Catherine (Kate) Middleton
One day to be known as HM Queen Catherine.

This is too stupid for belief.
