Is Bucknell really that bad?

I went to a different school, but my boyfriend played soccer there and I was there often: can confirm and mark 1993-1997 as that way, for certain.

It seems to be a popular school for kids these days who, a generation ago, would have gone to Middlebury/Bowdoin, but with the increased competition these days, can’t get in. So, I bet there are plenty of smart, competent and normal kids at Bucknell, they just aren’t pointy enough to get into higher ranked schools.

It seems like the SEC for rich/UMC tri-state kids who are "too good" for those schools.

No.

How can you hope to understand how a pipeline to the street works if you don’t first understand the principles behind a beer funnel?

Yes, we toured at 9am on a Saturday morning and there was a frat party going on, frat house back patio. Not a good look.

Sounds like an *AWESOME* look to me…

We visited & liked it.

Sounds like the biggest sin Bucknellians have committed is they are not on their knees apologizing for having testicles.

As a student, wouldn’t mind the partying. But I would not like the exclusiveness that’s been mentioned. Not cool.

My son is a sophomore at Bucknell and is so happy he decided to go there. Perfect balance for him - classes are hard but manageable, they are taught by professors and not TAs, the town is connected to campus and there many restaurants you can walk to from campus. It is a work hard play hard school, but you can still fit in if you are not into Greek life. Everyone can go to the Saturday day parties even if you are not in Greek life - the frats all join together to host them which is not typical.

He is getting a summer internship set up now - a very high % of sophomore students that want one will get one - the school works closely with Alumni to open up opportunities for the students.

As a parent I was a bit leery before we visited based on the feedback I see on DCUM, but allowed him to apply. In the end I am grateful he is at Bucknell and thriving and decided not to go to Kelly or Georgetown.

My daughter is very aEtsy and looking at schools now. She also loves Bucknell and thinks she would fit in well. It is more eclectic than DCUM makes it out to be. I doubt most of those making comments have ever visited, and seems they have a chip in their shoulders that you can get an amazing education with great future job prospects while actually enjoying your college experience.

Lame DCUM moms.

+1
Bucknell is a GREAT school. It gets horrible reviews on this site but it is a wholesome, clean cut community where many kids thrive.

It gets better reviews here than anywhere else I've seen. It sounds like a good school for what it is -- a one dimensional frat boy school for students who didn't get into business school.

Bucknell has a business school, geed, and a damn good one.

Freeman is a great business school - slash’s highly rated on P&Q.

And overall career success fir Bucknell can’t be beat.

Bucknell boosters out in force. Nice school but nothing special.

Not a Bucknell person but what does this even mean? What school is “special”? HBS? Wharton? I don’t even think the “pipeline to the street” guy is saying Bucknell is equivalent to Wharton. Seems like a great option for kids who are not Ivy-aspiring but are interested in finance, especially if you are down with the vibe of the school. Why do we have to put Bucknell in its place because it’s not Williams or whatever.

I had Bucknell, Trinity (CT) and Williams on my radar screen as a college applicant during the 1990’s. Back then, the “gap” between Bucknell and most SLAC’s didn’t seem that significant.

The farther you get away from the USNWR top 8ish SLACs, the more contempt they draw on this board, especially if people have the audacity to sing a school’s praises from time to time. You’d think the University of Richmond was a community college in Mississippi for all heat it takes. Nobody takes shots at Franklin & Marshall, for example. It’s in a similar region and similarly “ranked” as Bucknell, yet it flies peacefully under the radar.

Bucknell is fine. It’s very middle of the road. For the right price, it may make sense for some students. But, it is certainly not worth full price, nor is it in the same league as its higher ranked peers.

Get over yourself. We’re talking about the 30th ranked small college by one widely accepted measure. There are THOUSANDS of colleges in the US. Bucknell is only middle of the road in DCUM dreamworld. Families can make their own decisions about how much they are willing to pay for college, they don’t need you to be the arbiter of what is or isn’t worth it. And yes, maybe it’s not Williams, but few people get to go to Williams. Saying it’s not as good as “higher ranked” schools is maybe the most worthless criticism ever.
