racist remarks at Sherwood vs Einstein game

I heard that the Einstein student told their coach who later told their Einstein athletic director who said it was too late to do anything after the fact (noting the AD wasn’t at the game). Students then parents took it to social media which triggered notice to Sherwood admin who then took action.

Hence, the delay.

There were calls, letters, etc.

It’s a group of kids heckling their opponent and making a play on words. As adults, are we reading too much into it? Yes, it needs addressed but going out for blood because we think we know their intentions is wrong.

Look into the the students from the Sherwood boys soccer team. I’d estimate less than 20% are white. The remaining players are asian, Hispanic, black or a mix. It’s an incredibly diverse group of boys.

If any post should be deleted, it should be the one that accuses the Sherwood community of trying to keep their community white. Less than 50% of the students are white. How is that not diverse? Also, do you even know the history of Sandy Spring?

Sherwood is located in Sandy Spring, a community of quakers and freed slaves. Google our history and museums.

A statement that is literally correct while also being wildly misleading about Sherwood HS: https://gis.mcpsmd.org/ServiceAreaMaps/SherwoodHS.pdf

Not arguing about what is or isn't "diverse," but Sherwood HS is one of the whitest high schools in Montgomery County.

Whitman 64.5%
B-CC 55.6%
Walter Johnson 51.7%
Sherwood 49.1%

MCPS high school overall is 28.0%.

Also, Sherwood has 11.8% Asian-American students, Einstein has 6.1%, and MCPS high school overall is 14.8%.

The soccer players from Sherwood don't know about not using racist/bigoted/homophobic terms? That seems like a problem.

+1 one would think that if the school is diverse then they shouldn't be using racist slurs.

Does MCPS not have guidance for all HS and MS on what to do if there is heckling that is racist or gendered (separate guidance on both problematic speech by players and the crowd). My guess is that part of the problem was that coaches and athletic staff were not exactly sure what to do and were having to make up policy decisions on the fly because they weren't sure who exactly made the racist comments. If there is very specific guidance, they need new training.

This is the perfect type of policy that should be set from leadership in central office. If parents don't like it, school staff and administrators can just point the finger at MCPS and tell parents to bring it up to the superintendent. It's a win, win for everyone.

If I were queen, and heckling from the crowd occurred, the game would be paused immediately and the crowd (including parents) must leave the game. Students must leave school grounds immediately, parents of players can go wait in the car.

If a player is engaging in using hate speech (presumably this is much easier to identify the actual perpetrator) then they are ejected from the game immediately and suspended from team practices and games for the season.

They shouldn't be using racist slurs NO MATTER WHAT. It's hard to imagine a high school student who doesn't know that.

Well I heard that the Einstein students told their coach who addressed it with the Sherwood staff during the game. The Sherwood staff (AD?) then didn't do anything about it, the behavior continued in the 2nd half, and so the Einstein coach told their own AD (who was not at the game) who in turn contacted Sherwood. So I think the question stands regarding why the Sherwood athletic staff did nothing at the time. Did they not hear the comments? Did they not think the comments were crossing the line?

This is what I heard as well, and that the Sherwood coach claims they did not hear the racist language at the time (can't say I blame them, I'd probably deny it as well at this point). Anybody at this game want to give some details? Was the issue addressed with the crowd (a warning from the ref--or whoever was in charge--that the crowd had one more change but would be ejected if anymore heckling occurred? I still think this is likely a case of adults not being sure what the procedure is (or there is no procedure).

I also think that once some language has been suspected (especially from the crowd), just send the crowd outside. What is the harm, for one game?

Maybe each team needs to supply a "sportsmanship" monitor who can pay attention to the crowd and help athletic staff out if problems like these arise?

By MCPS standards this school doesn't seem diverse. It seems on par with many of the segregated W schools which also suffer from perennial racial incidents.

why would the post about the Sherwood community trying to keep their community white be deleted? It's accurate. The community fought tooth and nail to prevent Sherwood from joining the NEC and they won.
They did not want kids zoned for Springbrook, Paint Branch and Blake attending their school since these kids are mostly black, hispanic and lower income. Come on, Springbrook is known as being gang infested and those kids at Paint Branch are rough! So many behavioral issues!
And yes, I know the history of Sandy Spring very well but that is absolutely not relevant today where the demographics of Olney have shifted considerably.

The NEC has been around since 1998. We are talking over 20 years. Those folks are long out of Sherwood HS. What school does your kid go to? What program are they in? I'm an Einstein parent and I think the situation is terrible but I also hope that maybe at least some kids will realize that words have meaning. I don't think painting the entire community of Olney and Sherwood HS as racist is helpful in building bridges to communication.

DP. The Northeast Consortium goes back to 1998. See the background section, here: https://msa.maryland.gov/megafile/msa/speccol/sc5300/sc5339/000113/015000/015882/unrestricted/20121718e-106.pdf

I agree that it's not helpful (or accurate) to characterize all of Olney as racist - but 1998 is not ancient history. (Just ask the people who still bring up the rezoning of Horizon Hill from Wootton to RM in 1987.)
