Thousands of women have worn masks giving birth during this pandemic. And they've done it for their safety and the safety of the hospital staff.
OP, you'll be fine. It's just a mask. Remember - pandemic. community. > me me me me |
Omg we are so scared of COVID we have accepted denying a pregnant woman pain relief? This is crazy. I’m delivering at VHC in a few months (I’m fully vaxxed) and I will raise bloody hell if I can’t get an epidural. |
That seems like a lie told because there was no anesthesiologist available. Doctors are working with known COVID + patients and wear appropriate gear. Not knowing this woman’s status wouldn’t have been reason to refuse care to a patient. |
PP here - yes, I couldn't get the epidural. They told me that the anesthesiologist wouldn't come in until I had a negative test, and there was some kind of hold up with the rapid test they gave me. It was my second baby and it went fast - I was pushing about two hours after I had arrived at the hospital. They tested me maybe an hour after I arrived, and then the test took around an hour to come back. So by the time they came back with the negative test, I was already pushing (in my mask) and it was too late. This was November 2020, when everyone was still unvaccinated, so I'm sure things are different now. |
Ah yes the old other women have done it, you can to. Unfortunately in your equation the risk is super low with vaccination and a negative test. Remember women have been giving birth in cornfields for years with no help. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should have to. |
PP here. That is possible. I did wonder what would have happened if I had been covid-positive - no epidural at all? It is what they told me, though. |
Honestly denying pain medicine in labor is a violation of patient rights and you should ask for your records and speak to the patient advocate (don’t be surprised if your records reflect that you did not ask for an epidural) Wearing a mask in a pandemic does not reach that level. |
Then they can get vaccinated. If you work and healthcare and won’t get a vaccine then find a new line of work. Pregnant women should not have to sacrifice their comfort during the delivery for the sake of some stupid antivaxxer. Hell, I don’t feel the need to lift a finger to do anything for antivaxxers. I scroll past news articles of their deaths and DGAF anymore. |
That analogy makes zero sense. The masks are to make people safer, not to harm. At this point, if you cannot do back flips in a mask I'm not sure what's wrong with you. I had major surgery this year. I had to wear a mask the entire time. Even had to wear it while in my hospital bed recovering over the next few days. It was painful and not a fun time. But masks were worn by all. I'm not feeling bad for OP here. Sorry not sorry. |
I’m guessing when you had major surgery you were just lying there. Not doing an activity that’s as strenuous as running a marathon? Because that’s what OP was doing. She was in labor for 24 hours. Did you get out of breath during your surgery? I’m guessing not.

Funny, I feel the same way about people who refuse to mask given that people who are vaxxed can spread it, and there was an unvaccinated person (your child who are supposed to GAF about but apparently don't) in the room. Someone who doesn't understand that giving birth is not all about the woman, it's also about the child's safety, should really not be parenting. |
None of the people who I know who had labor that fast -- 2 hours from arrival at hospital to delivery, have gotten epidurals. There's always a wait. |
Please. We've all been in labor on this board. And you are not actively pushing and/or running a marathon for 24 hrs. OP was fine. She's just complaining. And yes, I did have to run a treadmill with the mask on to do heart/stress tests. It wasn't fun but I did it because that was hospital policy. And I didn't go whine about it on an anonymous chat board. OP had to wear a mask for the safety of others. And she's angry because the entirety of the hospital staff did not cater to her whims while she was there. My entire family works in a hospital - siblings, in laws, parent, extended family. They are F DONE with patients who can't figure out the rules 18 months on. Such BS |
My guess is that the anesthesiologist was busy, possibly with COVID patients. I don’t know the set up in your area, but anaesthesiologists in some areas are often highly involved with patients on ventilator support or ECMO. I’m only close to a small regional hospital, but was told at the outset that epidurals may not always be available if there was no chance of continued support from anaesthesiology. Full priority was given to emergency situations. |
RN here. Your pain is not more important than the risk to the doctor's life. Sorry. You're not going to die from labor pain. It will suck, but you're not dying. If you were positive, the doctor could die. |
