Does anyone know if Maryland has any fines for not wearing a mask in public? I find it so weird that Maryland is included in the list of states requiring masks but yet there seems to be little to no enforcement of the rule. So many businesses in places like Ocean City only say "masks recommended". There isn't even anything about wearing masks on the state's own Covid website.
From https://coronavirus.maryland.gov/#FAQ "All Marylanders are advised to take precautions to slow the spread of COVID-19: Wash your hands often with soap and water Cover your mouth and nose while sneezing or coughing Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth Avoid contact with sick people If you are sick, stay home and call your health care provider Practice social distancing — keep distance between yourself and others and avoid crowds" We now know that wearing masks is the surest way to prevent the spread so why isn't MD doing anything about it? Where is the leadership? |
Huh??? Do you even live in MD? What are you trying to accomplish by lying? The same link that you posted says the following: "Marylanders must wear masks or cloth face coverings in retail spaces and on public transportation beginning Saturday, April 18" What are you trying to accomplish? |
Mask wearing is NOT listed as one of the precautions on the MD Covid page. You know where else it is not listed? On the much touted "Maryland Strong: Back to Business Pledge": https://commerce.maryland.gov/Documents/BusinessResource/Maryland-Strong-Back-to-Business-Pledge-COVID-19.pdf So where is the enforcement or even encouragement about wearing masks? Other than a few tweets by Hogan and those signs on the highway encouraging the use of a mask, I haven't seen much. To the original question: is Maryland doing anything to enforce mask wearing? Other states have mandated masks and stated fines for breaking the rules. Maybe Maryland has something similar but I haven't heard about it or seen anyone enforcing it. Seems like either weak leadership or poor messaging. |
Well, I know they are sending out a COVID task force to inspect businesses to see if they are following the mandatory mask requirements. Giant Food was cited, and several restaurants were in the news recently for not following the mask requirement. It's clearly being taken seriously. |
| Miami is imposing a $500 fine for not wearing a mask. I am supportive of Maryland doing the same |
| What are you talking about OP? |
| Maryland is really not doing anything to enforce mask wearing. |
|
Are you in MD? Every store I go to, and they are enforcing the mask requirement. Where are you see all these unmasked people?
MoCo has been inspecting businesses and shutting them down for non-compliance: https://bethesdamagazine.com/bethesda-beat/coronavirus/county-says-it-shut-down-two-silver-spring-businesses-for-not-using-social-distancing/ |
|
MoCo visited 1,900 businesses to enforce requirements:

| Montgomery County is doing good with enforcing and the declining numbers show it. Other counties are doing nothing and their numbers are only going up. Unless Hogan enforces at the state level, things will only get worse overall. |
| Because there is no one to enforce it. You think the Police should respond put every time a Karen calls to say someone isn’t wearing a mask? They don’t have the manpower for that. |
This. |
| How can we see which businesses were cited or "educated" by this team? I'm curious to know. |
You're an idiot. It says right there in the link you posted. Take time to familiarize yourself with the website instead of spouting nonsense here. You obviously don't live in MD. |

Nothing about wearing masks on the back to business pledge:
Responsible business owners are encouraged to take the pledge to: Create an environment that allows for physical distancing between individuals (6 feet is recommended) to the extent possible. Ensure their place of business is routinely cleaned and encourage our employees to frequently wash their hands. Provide flexibility to their employees, provide training and education and clearly communicate policies and procedures. Reduce and disinfect as many ‘high touch surfaces’ as possible Additionally follow guidance provided by the CDC, the Maryland Department of Health and their own industry. |
