Dear Parents and Guardians:
Over the last few days, students from several MCPS high schools have reached out to the district, school principals and administrators to make us aware of allegations of sexual assault that potentially involve MCPS students. We are deeply troubled by these allegations and we commend our students for coming forward to inform us of these alleged incidents. The safety of our students is our top priority and we are committed to maintaining an environment in which all students can learn and thrive. I want to assure you that all allegations involving our schools and/or students that come to our attention will be investigated. If you or your child have information regarding an alleged sexual assault, you should notify the Montgomery County Police Department immediately by calling 301-279-8000. Families may also contact the Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program (VASAP) for support. VASAP provides information and referrals, advocacy, as well as crisis and ongoing counseling for victims of sexual assault. Additionally, we want to encourage students who may be hesitant to contact the police to take advantage of the confidential Montgomery County Hotline by calling 240-777-4357 or 301-738-2255 (EveryMind). A trained staff member or volunteer will provide supportive listening and information, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students may text the EveryMind hotline telephone number every day, available between noon and midnight. Parents and students should report any bullying or harassment by completing MCPS Form 230-35, Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation Reporting Form. Additional resources for families can be found at: http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/bullying/. We understand that the experiences that have been shared by our students have caused feelings of deep sadness, anger, hurt and disappointment. MCPS is committed to a fair process where all students involved will be provided an opportunity to address the allegations. We ask that you allow the district to gather information. Engaging in public shaming or bullying in response to these allegations is very harmful to all involved and can negatively impact on potential investigations. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support. Sincerely, Jack R. Smith, Ph.D. Superintendent of Schools |
| Allegations are from Montgomery Blair but there may be others. |
| I'm thinking it's Blair, but I don't *know* that. |
|
The email says several schools.
It could be any school. And, odds are there have been incidents at literally every school. |
| Did these assaults occur on school grounds or is there no further info? |
+1 it could be anything from a guy grabbing a girl's private parts to full on rape. I've had a few guys touch me inappropriately in HS (and outside of HS). I was embarrassed to report it in school. I did tell one teacher as a "hypothetical", and the teacher kept pushing me about exactly what happened. I was too embarrassed to outright report it. Good for those kids who are reporting it. I know that some parents thing it's nbd, though. Shameful. |
| Yikes. I’m not comfortable with the public identification on social media of minors who have been accused. There has to be a better way. |
| I'm telling you guys, these anonymous instagram posts are full of BS. If someone really got assaulted, it should by all means be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Administrators who turned a blind eye should also be held accountable. BUT these "black at *****" and "female at ******" where ANYONE can just submit an anonymous claim... don't ever underestimate the power of bored teenagers (and adults) sitting at home ready to write fan fiction. Or people with a grudge against someone or their family. I could literally go on that account right now and claim to be a high school girl who was assaulted at Blair. And I don't even live in Maryland! |

From the Bethesda Beat article posted above:
First, it was students at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring. Then students chimed in from Albert Einstein, Richard Montgomery, Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Thomas S. Wootton, as well as Eastern Middle School. Soon, more than 100 allegations from at least 12 schools had been compiled on a handful of pages. Other schools mentioned include: Col. Zadok Magruder High, Sligo Middle, Paint Branch High, Wheaton High, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High and Newport Middle. |
+1 agree with reporting assault; don't agree with anonymous accusations on social media without proof, especially against minors. I am a mom of a boy and girl, and my DS goes to one of the HS named on that article. My DD will be going there soon. If there is a serious issue of assault and boys who are sexual predators, I dam* well want school administrators to do something about it. But, an anonymous accusation is not the right approach. Did these girls (boys?) tell teachers/parents/administrators about what happened? That's the correct process, not an anonymous social media post. And I say this as someone who was touched inappropriately when I was in HS. |
| I heard it was at Churchill. |
Kind of like that witch hunt to catch the man assaulting the young people putting up BLM posters on the Capital Crescent Trail. The social media mob falsely identified two innocent people. |
I'm sure it happens *everywhere*, not that this is an excuse. |
| Students having sex in high schools is not new in mcps, but attacking other students should be reported. Blair has near 3,000 students. I don't know how students running to different classrooms in the narrow keep social distance from each other. |
