Bon Appetit not paying non-white editors for appearances

I thought this was shocking. One of my favorite people to watch on Bon Appetit is Sohla El-Waylly. She does many of the Bon Appetit Youtube channel videos and she revealed that Bon is only paying the white editors (i.e. the staff doing the cooking demonstration) for video appearances which to me is insane.

Every 10th video on that channel is her and she gets a LOT of views.

This is, unfortunately, not limited to Bon Appetit.

With the collapse of the economic model for traditional media and the rise of "content," there is a tremendous amount of unpaid labor. It's not limited to POC, but I have no doubt they are hit disproportionately by it.

There's also the fact that why should the disadvantage give up the jobs they've worked damned hard for (she has 15 years in the industry) at prestige organizations because the company has instituted bad policies?

A few months ago I pointed out to DH that they were pushing both Sohlae and Pryia more and more to the front. Which is great, I love them but it read like “Hey, diversity! Box checked!”.

I know thr director of the test kitchen there- chris morocco. He posted some Bs story On his insta that he supports his bipoc colleagues and yet admits he was given favorable treatment as a male man. He should resign too. Thats so gross

For too long people with favor or advantage have sat by knowing others were disadvantaged and been quite content to take their piece and go on.

If you call yourself a liberal and ally, letting a colleague of equal talent and hard work basically work herself into impoverishment says something else entirely.

Chris is 40. I think Sohla is as well. They both graduated from the Culinary Institute of America. She's making 50K and I guarantee he's not walking out of those kitchens without 125K.
