I think his point is that rec teams that aren't together for the long term, with continuity of teammates and coaching shouldn't have to face teams that are professionally coached and train together regularly in an all star rec tournament. I can see where he's coming from.

That said, even with that disadvantage to the rec teasm the Barca teams weren't able to capitalize. So no harm, no foul. It wouldn't be fun to see a travel team come in an clobber everyone, but if it's competitive and on level, why not?

Ok folks, I have to say. I have seen rec teams that did stay together for years. Sometimes, that parent coach can be a guy who played at a high level in college or something and knows how to run a practice. I've seen some solid rec teams with kids that maybe even should play travel based on ability, but whose parents won't commit the time and money. So they play rec. I've seen those rec teams enter lower level travel tournaments and win.

So, at the lower levels, lines can get blurred.

Because the level of competition is even. None of those “curated teams with expensive coaches” even won their flights, which leads me to believe that what truly would’ve been unfair, is to put those teams in a regular travel tournament, because clearly they’re only ready to compete against ‘Rec allstars.’ The rec players just played a competitive season, while this tournament was the first competition the FCB teams were participating in. You need to get over yourself.

I heard the Barca team beat rec teams badly in the U11 age group at that tournament.

How much does it cost to play on one of these not-rec-but-rec-level teams like Barca?

Our league has rec and travel. For U9, I think it was around $1800 for travel (and the nutjob coach is free wth purchase). I am sure many pay more than that. $3,000 seems really expensive to me.

Girls ECNL (Loudoun, McLean, BRYC, VDA) is $10k+ per year if you include travel to tournaments.
