Seriously people, the only way out of this is for the House and senate to get this entire administration and cabinet out of office and replace it with a caretaker government until 2028. Anything short of that and we won't have much of a country left.

Congress needs to act and nullify the "emergency" tariffs with a simple majority vote.

The POTUS should not have this power outside of a legit emergency, like invasion. This is why the House is on recess - the discharge petition actually is likely to pass, just like it did in the Senate.

Yes. But this is why Mike Johnson as Speaker is a tragedy for the nation. The weeniest man in Washington is unlikely to bring such a bill to the floor. Congress reclaiming its authority on tariffs would pass easily, and that makes Little Mikey scared. All he knows is to do the bidding of Trump and Musk. The man has no principles.

How is that done if Republicans won't do it? The cabinet is certainly not going to do it.

Could Democrats offer up Mitt Romney as the alternative until 2028? He seems sane.... Would that fly with Congress?

Part of it, yes. The CR was specifically designed to give Trump these powers, or at least to remove oversight from Congress.

The de minimis loophole comes from back in the 1930s. The idea back then was, say you went on a vacation to Paris, you shouldn’t have to file customs paperwork or pay taxes if you decided to ship some little Eiffel Tower statues to your friends back home.

Congress in 2015 then raised the de minimis threshold from $200 to $800. However, the e-commerce world exploded, and Chinese companies began using the de minimis loophole to ship cheap goods (ex. Temu and Shein) into the USA direct to consumers without paying any customs duty.

Yesterday as part of the global trade reset and tariff structure, President Trump revoked authorization for Chinese goods to transfer to the USA using the de minimis rule. The de minimis exemption has been cancelled for all products coming out of China. The rule change only targets China and Chinese shippers. No one else.

It's a data point of one, but I just checked in with my Trump-voting parent a short time ago to see what he thinks. Parent is still sticking with Trump -- parent says that bringing back manufacturing to the United States is very important.

Mind-blowing, isn't it.

Today is the first time I think I've ever heard my parent use the word "manufacturing", this is not something my parent has ever mentioned before.
