Makes you wonder how other "faith leaders" feel or if it is just an act.

Sounds like he did not have a mentor or teacher in the faith to guide him and answer questions.

I listened to a few of his songs. He should have kept Jesus and quit the band instead.

Seriously, Osmbund, Falwell, all just actors and showman in it for money. They are like the antithesis of how Jesus lived.

Maybe he did, but did not find the mentoring to be convincing.

I read his account on IG and quite frankly I admire his bravery. It has to be extraordinary daunting to come out as an atheist when you have built up a huge base of supporters who follow and support you strictly for your Christianity.

IMO, it's a crisis of faith, which is "normal".

"open to the idea that God is there," though not in the same fashion he was raised to believe.

As a long time Christian, I can't say I blame him. While I did not stop believing that there is a "God", I stopped believing in some of the things I was taught when I was younger about God and faith. One only has to look at history and too many religious leaders today to know that religious leaders can be corrupt and only too fallible.

I try to live by the grace of God and "to love others" as God commands. That's really in a nutshell all you need to know about God and how you are supposed to live your lie. Everything else is just man made dos/don'ts.

I don't think he's an atheist. I think he is an agnostic and grappling with the existence of God in a world filled with pain.

As someone who was raised atheist and became Christian due to my own exploration of the faith, I can really understand this. The fundamentalist version of Christianity is pretty absurd to believe in.

When you indoctrinate a child into your faith, showing no acknowledgement of alternative belief systems, hopefully you've drummed it into their brains hard enough that they obediently follow it and inculcate their offspring into it, too. But when you are dealing with a free thinker, eventually they will reject what was pushed on them. Food for thought.

Many rock singers start in Christian bands as it is easier to move up in the biz that way and then they switch over to rock or country.

Let's also remember one person--of a faith, job, geography, race, etc--does not represent the whole group. None of the people mentioned on this thread are anything like the faith of my family and friends.
