9-yo DD Birthday Present - Wants Hair Colored Purple

Anonymous
Dad here - need advice for a complete surprise for DDs nine years old birthday present, which means not even letting mom know about. DD wants to color her very dark/black her purple (or blue at times) and I think I’ll surprise her with such products. Googled a bit and it appears there’re basically color dyes and color chalks and extensions as good options for kids. I’m leaning towards the dye as that sounds like the real thing and what she really wants? Any suggestions or ideas welcomed and much appreciated. Bday is in a week+ btw!

That’s a nope from me.

Yes, why not? Childhood is the time to do things like this since it’s harder later in life with a job etc. Especially when school isn’t in session it’s not a big deal.

It's really hard for dark hair to hold a dye like that without bleaching it first. And that's not something I'd want to tackle at home.

Because once you go down this road so early, tattoos are next

Why aren't you letting her mother know about it? I dyed my daughter's hair red so I'm not opposed but keeping this a secret from mom will get you in the doghouse. If you're not already.

Sounds rad! I'd do it on my almost 9yo if it temporary or semi-permanent.

I just dyed my hair purple, and dyed my 9yo’s hair blue.

We used dye from Arctic Fox. If her hair is really dark, you’ll have a hard time getting it to show up. Try the purple rain shade - if anything will show, it’s that. Most places recommend lightening (bleaching) dark hair before adding a bright color, but I wasn’t willing to do anything that permanent. The Arctic Fox website will show you roughly what it’ll look like on different shades of hair.

If her hair is too dark to take the dye, your options are to bleach it then dye it, or get extensions.

Overtone might be great. It is a conditioner and hair will stay healthy!

This is so dumb on so many levels I can't even stand it. "This road," "so early," "tattoos are next."

we did a 10$ conditioner semi permanent product from the grocery store on my dark brown daughter's hair (might have been Loreal but don't remember.) It took really well--surprising considering how dark her hair was. We left it on twice as long as the directions said for that reason. She's had it a month and I don't think it's going to go away anytime soon (though of course you can see her brown roots). I was considering Overtone, but at 50 bucks....this was just as good I suspect.

For dark hair you have to use bleach first or it won't work. Here's what we did:
- Manic Panic Lightning Bleach
- next day use something like Manic Panic violet night
Also as pp said, the color isn't going to fade anytime soon and once hair is bleached, it doesn't fade back to the darker color so she should be really sure she wants it. Have fun!

You can’t color very dark hair, OP, and I strongly advise you not to bleach it so that you can color it, it’s toxic.

I would buy clip-on hair extensions in her favorite colors.
