I have a 10 yo who has had orange, red, blue, and green hair at various times. We use Manic Panic -- it washes out in about 6-10 washes. He has sandy brown hair, and the light colors don't take in his hair.
I think the toughest thing will be that you'll have to significantly lighten her hair, as PPs noted, but that when the hair color washes out, the lightened hair will still be lighter. And as it grows out, she'll have lighter hair at the end and dark roots. The chalks are useless. If you don't want a permanent color change, I think a clip-in extension is your best bet: https://www.claires.com/us/hair/fake-hair/?cgid=49 |
| Why is it a surprise for mom, too? My answer depends on that. |
| Yes I don’t understand surprising mom |

Honestly, this is really harsh for dark hair. I let my daughter with medium brown hair go teal when she was 13, but we went to my hair salon and did it right. I wouldn’t dare attempt with dark hair any other way.
Also—people who act like hair color is a gateway drug are insane. I had a purple Mohawk all through school and I survived and managed to turn into a relatively normal adult. |
| I actually would do the chalk route, it shows up more because it just basically sits on the hair. |

We put this in 11 year old DD's hair 6-7 weeks ago. She has medium brown hair with blond tips. This made her brown hair very dark purple, almost black. The blond dips were a very bright purple. The color faded from her dark hair in a couple of weeks, but her tips are still purple. Not as vibrant, but definitely purple.

Let her do it. We're in quarantine anyway.
It would make her sssssooooooooo happy and she's not breaking any law or hurting anybody. It gets a little of the rebellion out of their system too so they don't rebel in other ways later. |

This is not a ‘fun surprise’ for mom if you’re going to dye/bleach. Some people have very strong feelings about this so you need to talk to your partner for anything beyond chalk or clip on extensions
You can bleach at home. It’s not that hard, but for dark hair you might need to do it 2-3 times to get past the brassy orange phase to blind. Then arctic fox colors are great. They will eventually rinse out if your white tiles (in a couple weeks) but probably it’s best done outdoors. |
| Oh PP again. I used this Bleach Manic Panic Flash Lightning Hair Bleach Kit - 30 Volume Cream Developer - Hair Lightener Kit for Light, Medium Or Dark Brown & Black Hair Color - Hair https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GELXJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_JpQvSp7oTZ2Si |

go to Overtone.co (not .com, .co)
It is for dark hair and it does wash out. My 17 y.o. has had a variety of the Rose to hot pink shades, and she is a brunette. There is a section for brown hair. |
| ^^get the color and the matching conditioner. |
| ^^sorry I keep posting but just want to say with Overtone you do not lighten the hair. It does not damage hair. It sits on top of the hair shaft, as in "overtone" |
|
Do. Not. Surprise. Mom.
-signed, a mom |
| I agree with Overtone or a spray on hair color. I think colorista by Loreal makes one. |

I have dark hair and I used a hair wax. It just sits on top of the hair and washes out.
