Peloton bike vs. treadmill for weight loss?

Anonymous
I've always used a treadmill at the gym to keep my weight in normal range. I don't see myself going back to the gym any time soon. Peloton isn't delivering treadmills right now, so I was thinking about getting the bike instead. Can I get a reasonable workout (in terms of calories burned) from a Peloton bike? Is it significantly lower than a tread?

Have you done spin classes in the past?

No. I ride a bike outside a lot and like it, but never get my heart rate up in the same way as when I run on a treadmill.

I m not a big fan of spinning so I would do treadmill. You can use any manufacturer with the peleton app but won't able to see live results. This is what I do and I love the app.

Go for a run outside. While staying away from others, of course.

Peloton. Spinning gave me toned thin legs that a decade of jogging couldn’t touch. Would never go back! The trick is don’t over do it, twice a week for 45m plus arms religiously. More than that and your apetite picks up. You need recovery for weight loss. (Lost 20lbs and have kept off for 10y).

Obviously you may prefer running over biking, but in terms of calorie burn and ability to get a good workout, you can definitely do that with the Peloton bike. Don't compare it to riding a bike outside - of course you can get a great workout that way too if you know how, but it's just as easy to ride comfortably without getting your heart rate up much. Spinning classes are completely different and are focused on increasing speed and resistance, often in intervals, to increase intensity. There are also specific programs such as Power Zone training where you take a fitness test and then work at particular intensities with outputs specific to you.

You can for sure get a great workout with the Peloton and I think the main advantage of buying one is class feel and comparing yourselves to other / doing structured workouts. If you have motivation to workout and train on your own I would go the treadmill route.

I have a treadmill and put my road bike in a Wahoo KCKR trainer and prefer to ride with Zwift.

peloton is totally different than biking outside in terms of heart rate, etc. It's HIIT as opposed to steady biking.

A Peloton ride is not necessarily HIIT, but I agree it is totally different than riding outside. There is no coasting. You're either riding on a flat road or climbing (usually climbing) the whole time. OP, a person can definitely get as good a workout on a Peloton as on a treadmill. But really it's a question of whether *you* will work as hard on a Peloton. Both provide an excellent workout and can provide a big calorie burn if you put in the effort.

Not OP. By "plus arms" do you mean upper body exercises?

Adjust your diet first. It is 80% diet and 20% workouts. You can’t out train a bad diet.

Not Original responder, but there are portions of some rides where you use weights. There are also many other types of classes using Peloton besides just bike.

I think it probably depends on the person, but I know DH has had a lot more success with the Tread than the Bike.
