If he was drunk and yelling to the point where a child stepped in to intervene, I can see her saying, "enough of this" and pulling the plug. That moment, seeing her son defend her or jump into the fight may have gotten all her mother hen bells pinging and forced her to see that the situation is not a great one for the kids.

Thus explaining why she rented that house weeks before the argument, and told him she was divorcing him the day before that argument.

Actually, the timeline of events kind of explains how he ended up in an argument that got out of hand. Having your wife tell you she is going to file for divorce and wants sole physical custody of your children can make very calm people lose their cool.

AJ used Maddox to get out of marriage numero uno since she knew he didn't want kids, and then use Z and John (formerly known as Shiloh, but trying to be respectful) to seal the deal with marriage numero dos (or tres, I can't keep track) and then just grew and grew immediately instead of allowing for a natural progression -- it's like she decides she wants kids so she gets 6 at once, and then decides she's done with that part of her life.

Brad told the "Shiloh wants to be called John" story back when she was roughly 2 years old. He told it on Oprah. She was going through a Peter Pan phase and wanted to be called John like one of the Darling children. He most likely told it as a cute two-year old story. He did not tell that story with the intent of saying "hey...my two year old knows she is transgendered and wants to go by her boy name".

In the years since, both Angelina and Brad have only referred to her as Shiloh. Never John.

Yes - she is a major tomboy and perhaps transgendered. We don't know for sure. But please do not call her John. It was supposed to be a funny kid story...that is all.

This makes a lot of sense. Didn't help that he was drinking. (it's s long flight though!) but I'm guessing this is the moment she told him.
