Government Shutdown - Sep 2025 Thread

I am not sure we are getting paid for last week and the beginning of this week until this is over. How shitty.

what makes you think you will be paid while furloughed? It is not a given.

Because Congress passed a bill in 2019 stating Fed workers will receive back pay during shutdowns! It is a given unless Trump and Vought break the law, which I wouldn’t put it past them.

Given their track record, I don’t expect them to respect this law AT ALL.

+1 budget for furlough without pay.
And then hear Trump brag about how much money he saved

Absolutely they aren't paying. My DH is a fed and he's being so weirdly nonchalant about this as if he's sure he'll get paid because there is a law. i work in a sector that has been devestated by illegal actions of this administration and think that's incredibly naive.

The latest shutdown memo from OPM says people will be paid.

It says “based on laws currently in effect.” I look forward to the long court case about what happens when they change it and try to apply it retroactively. It’s like recessions but for furloughs!

You expect whatever the Hill negotiates to be a bill that removes retroactive pay for federal employees? In other words, you think the Democrats will vote to end the shutdown for less than they started with?

Even if Republicans blow up the filibuster and pass a bill solo, you realize congressional employees ALSO aren’t being paid during this shutdown, right? Will Congress decide not to pay their staff?

Why does it have to be part of the budget bill? Why can’t it be passed after? And perhaps they exempt essential employees who were working but not those that were furloughed. Do you think “regular Americans” would object to feds NOT getting paid when they don’t have to work? And it would further demoralize the feds. Win-win from their perspective.

Any suggestions for small gifts to furloughed staff that I can pickup from wholefoods? Maybe chocolate and coffee beans?

Why do you think they are probably RIFed?

That is accurate, but you will be paid for the last pay period on time.

Reporting that only 23% of Feds are actually furloughed today. 77% are still keeping important Federal programs going without pay.

Because my GS staff do things the President doesn't like while my contractors do things the President likes and that we are statutorily required to do.

Uh no.

+1. Skip the gifts.

They’re not going to do this.

So 77% still working? Kind of hoping the silver lining would be less traffic

DOS rolled out the details and instructions yesterday afternoon. They were prepared, it appears, much better than other agencies. My group of 400 or so usually stayed through each previous shutdown because we were/are a working capital fund. 100 of those 400 are third-party contractors, and they were told to report to work, even though most are teleworking even still. As long as their contract has funding and there is a COR or someone to oversee the requirement, they come in.

My DH just texted me the same- crickets at his agency. Weird.

Same! What is going on? Normally there's a draft for me to send to staff. I've been through so many shutdowns before.

I couldn't believe I didn't have a single email.

We’re going to need a presidential crimes commission for when this regime is ousted.

I just checked and almost threw up. What in the fresh hell is that. That blatantly fake propaganda should not be on a taxpayer web page. This outrageous!!!!
I agree, pres crimes commission is needed.

But the plan is to fire most non essential right? So do you get paid if RIF?

I don’t think that’s true. Vought/OMB wants to accelerate the firings that were already being considered. But a bunch of agencies, even with non-essential personnel, have already hit their “targets”.

So you haven’t been told you are furloughed or anything? You are expected to show up?

I am definitely furloughed. Yes we were all expected to show up, but normally can leave in 15min. We didn't have any information yesterday either.
