Rent payments to off-campus apartment daughter moved out of?

What’s the rumor about suspended rent? Are we going to be able to get out of the remaining months? All of her classmates left her college town. Do all parents intend to keep paying the remaining months of rent? Feels like robbery.

Feels like robbery to fulfill a lease?

Surely, someone signed a lease that would tell you exactly what payments you/your child are legally obligated to pay and when. Private leases aren't suspended by the college's actions.

Aren’t potus and congress doing something with rent?

The lease is for 4 more months...everyone left, college is basically shut down, her campus job ended.

Every single parent is casually sending landlords remaining rent for housing our kids can’t use?

Isn’t this an act of God that landlord can seek relief for lost rent from something congress passes? How can my daughter pay rent without a job?

Yes you pay per the lease. Your child can live there. Dorms were closed not private housing.

Oh but your child CAN use the apartment. Nothing prevents that.

In fact, I wish my kid had an off-campus apartment rather than getting kicked out of the dorms. Didn't you see the giant thread on this? https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/864583.page

There may be lease/mortgage deferments coming, but ultimately you still have to pay what you agreed to when you signed the lease.

You signed a lease. It’s binding,

Be grateful your child is home and healthy.

Do you understand the definition of a lease?

If they kicked your daughter out or are highly encouraging her to leave or something (like dorms are doing) then maybe you’d have a point; but otherwise I don’t understand why you think you wouldn’t have to pay rent. Most apartments are owned by private landlords NOT the college. Just because the college shuts down doesn’t mean they do.

You signed the lease. Your daughter has a functional apartment that she could live in — she just chose not to. I’m sorry you’re not getting this but like...ma’am. Think with your head, please.

Don’t pay and you DD credit may be ruined And she’ll end up paying a lot more in Increased penalties for having sub par credit rating — higher interest rates for cars or credit cards, not being able to get certain jobs, more in
Deposits, etc.

Pay it.,people lose their jobs every day and have rent
Obligations. Your DD is lucky she has you as a safety net.

It's mid-March. She would be finished with school in mid-May right? So that's 2 months. Even if you could break the lease there's probably at least a 2 month penalty.

When my DC lived in an off campus apartment we had to pay for 12 months, including the summer when the apartment was empty.

Yes - you pay your rent. It sucks, but landlords have expenses, mortgage, insurance, and maintenance that still takes place. None of that stopped. You signed a lease.

This is one of the downsides to private housing in university. Same thing would happen if your daughter decided to drop out of school, or if she had to take a medical leave of absence. If your landlord is the university, they will usually work with you. private businesses are a different kettle of fish.

Plus, the money is already budgeted, no? Hopefully you can get comped somehow, but it isn't an unexpected expense.
